Although I'm not new to firearms I am new to 1911's.Tomorow my ten day waiting period is over(I live in Cali)and I get to pick up my SA 1911 Mil-Spec.Now its time for me to start buying accessories to go along with my purchase. Can anyone enlighten me on which aftermarket accessories(magazines etc,)are good buys and which ones to stay away from?
Thanks

Get Wilson Combat mags. They are by far the best mags on the market. You can always spice up your SA with some pretty grips. Here's a nifty web site that has a nice selection of grips www.pickagrip.com

That will give you beauty and function. Later down the road, if you want to add more parts, there's a wealth of possibilites with the 1911 platform.

Thanks ArmySon you must have read my mind,I was going to add aftermarket grips to my post. And so many to choose from.
Thanks!

MarkO, welcome to the world of 1911's.

Asking which magazines are best will get a whole lot of different answers, since it really depends on what works best in your pistol. I have had good luck with Shooting Stars, USGI, Randall (now out of business), Colt commercial, and Mag-Pac. I have had spotty luck with Wilsons but the same magazines work fine in a buddy's pistols.

I invite you to drop in for a visit at http://www.1911forum.com after you pick up your pistol and have a chance to shoot it. A range report would be nice.

Congratulations, you won't regret it. I also am picking up a new SA "loaded" soon. Just waiting my ten days. The one thing that I intend to do is have the sharp edges beveled or if I can find the right shop, have a meltdown treatment done. The pistol has lots of corners which will be rough on leather. Other than that, I intend to shoot it a lot and see if it has any problems that need to be resolved when it goes in for cosmetics.

Ditto on the Shooting Star mags. They were originally manufactured under the "Packard" brand name and then McCormick bought them out (as I understand). They've worked real well for me. Ten rounders with grip extension are very functional.

Suggest contacting the Springfield Custom Shop; those folks have WAY more experience than most of us. Do extreme-quality work, too.

Thanks for the fast response guys, after I take it to the range tomorrow I'll recheck those sites again with plastic in hand!

I picked up my new SA 1911 this morning and I'm just as impressed now,if not more so than when I first looked at it prior to purchase. Thanks to all of you for supplying me with with those great sources for grips and mags. One more question(at least for now),this gun came with the coupons for the Springfield Fully Loaded Essentials, well the 10 round, single stack magazines work with this gun,and if so how is the reliability of these mags?Any other suggestions would be welcomed.
Thanks again!

Wilson Combat mags. Suck it up and pay the price, you'll never regret it. Invest in a holster for use at the range. It'll save on dings and scrapes.

Get a Bore Snake and use it immediately after finishing at the range.
