"new" M1 questions

Hi folks. I'm another casualty of the M1 fever that seems to be going around. I just got an SA M1 (really should't have, but that's another story), SN 3032XXX, barrel marked SA 3-45 with a beautiful bore, correct cartouches on stock, metal finish is approx 97%. The previous owner installed a NM op rod, and glass bedded the stock. Now to the questions-
What does the National Match op rod offer? Increased shot-to-shot lockup and consistency?

Does the glass bedding negatively affect the rifle's value or function in any way? Should I consider getting a replacement stock?

Is there an online source for full takedown instructions?

I have some FN-manufactured ball ammo dating from '59. Is this corrosive?

Lastly, did I get a good deal for $550?
So far, I can manage 2.5" groups at 100 yards. I can probably do better when I'm less excited.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I'd say you got a good deal. A rifle like you discribed would go for 700 plus at most gun shows. Your rifle was made in 10/44 so the barrel not orginal. Untill you test it I'd assume the ammo was corrosive. For the answers to your questions (and more) check out Lane's Tips Page for M1s. -- Kernel

oops, spoke too soon

Well, the rifle's not quite as original as I thought, but it's still close. The stock is not correct; it was manufactured in 1953. That doesn't affect me very much. I just love the feel of this rifle. I'm almost tempted to go out and buy a Ruger Mini-14 to get a cheap-to-shoot, scaled down version of my new "favorite" rifle! Thanks for your reply, Kernel.
