new m&p sport

Hey all, im a ar15 and general rifle noob here just picked up a new s&w m&p15 sport from my local gunshop for 650 otd.. although im relativeley new to the rifle world and the ar platform i am a deep handgun enthusiast and consider myself rather resourceful in gathering the proper information to make a purchase on a quality firearm for my intended purposes.. after spending months online and reading various literature and looking thru this forum with its many awesome and knowledgeable members i decided to go entry level with the sport over building my rifle from parts.. although i do intend on having my tacticool frankenrifle in the near future i figured for the purpose of plinking the sport would pose as a great training tool to familiarize myself with the ar line of black rifles.. being a past s&w owner and dealing with their very reputable cs i was sold and am excited to really see what this rifle can do.. i intend on thoroughly abusing the crap out of this rifle since i really want to see if all the nay sayers about the melonite barrel and lack of FA and dust cover have rooted points.. heck for 650 its not too bad a loss to possibly have to send a rifle which may fail to smith for a repair or replacement and if i have to be the one to disover any flaws in the design i would happily be the one to point it out to them for possible reevaluation and revision.. all in all i am excited about my pusrchase and will be taking my new toy to the range and will keep you all posted on her preformance.. til them my primary defense gun will continue to be my xd40sc.. im eager to hear any input from other sport owners on their experiences.

Welcome to the asylum!

Congrats you made a great choice:D Should it fail which is highly doubtful send it back to S&W. They'll repair or replace it... :D

Proud owner of the Sport. I was wondering what type of abuse you were going to test on it? I have always wanted to do a round count of continuos shooting and letting it get dirty until until it failed to function. However, most of my range session only last 200 or so rounds before I run out of time at the range.

Congratulations on your new rifle and hope it's as good as some of us lucky owners currently own.

well i will be quite modest at first most to familiarize myself with the platform and i want to start handling more high end battle ready rifles to have a good baseline to start but once the testing begins i plan to use this review http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/20...ger/-gun-review-smith-and-wesson-mp15-sport/ as my inspiration. this review was the one that led me to believe that smith did an amazing thing here for the entry-level ar enthusiast and i plan on adding wet muddy florida everglades conditions to the test while using less favorable steel cased ammo and various assortments of surplus nato, .223 and reloads though this will not be an immediate attempt to truly destroy my first rifle i want to prove that though lacking in some parts it excells in others.. it will also base alot of my decisions on future rifle purchases.. i just hope i find enough time to really get to know this sport

2000 rounds through mine, no issues. The handguard can get hot as it's not shielded.

Nothing has loosened up or started to rattle. Upper/lower fit is still tight.

After 9 months of ownership, the only things I've done to it is add a canvas sling, mount my $100 dot and put a more ergonomic rubber buttpad on the stock.

yea that and the pistol grip are the first things im definately changing on mine.. anyone have any suggestions for a good heat shielded carbine length handgard with slots to mount rails? again im trying to stay on a similar budget as the rifle so not too high end please and i have no need for quad rails aside from a flashlight laser combo i will not be adding too many accessories beside optics

i was also curious to hear from other m&p15 owners that own both the sport and other variations of the m&p as to how they compare in maintenence reliability and accuracy

I've fed mine Lake City M855 62 gr FMJ and Hornady reloads of 55 gr FMJ and V-Max. I'm probably around 1.2K rounds. It does share range time with my OR and 15-22. I have kept mine strictly iron sight but curious on how accurate the grouping would be with a scope.

I also have the M&P 15 OR. They are the same pretty much the same for me. I have some cosmetic differences but they have been both flawless and plenty accurate. I have used a scope on my OR and it shoots less than 1 MOA. I am going to try the same scope on the Sport to see how they compare.

+1 on the Magpul handguard. I have it on mine.

Nice setup on the sport i love the look of the od green is that a magpul buttstock also? And i 15-22 in the near future.. and i would love to see your groups with the scope on the sport next to your OR groups im sure they will be just as tight if not tighter.. i have fed my baby 20 meager rounds of american eagle 55gr .223 and she ate em all but the big test is when my bulk m193 comes in next week but i know she will do just fine.. also i am looking for a good option for the sling point that goes on the buffer tube im not sure what its called and my searches come up empty online..
