New Lott Article

Thanks for the URL. Dr. Lott's response is excellent.

My concern is that the lie about Texas concealed handgun licensees was out there before it was repeated by the LA Times, and it's no doubt still in circulation. Ideally, Lott's revelation of the lie and the shame of the liars would reach as many people as the lie itself. The lie would then be killed and the liars would be discredited. But, due to the corrupt ethics of the media, which spread the lie in the first place, I don't think this will happen.

The bottom line, I guess, is that the lie will live on, regardless of Dr. Lott's fine refutation of it.

This is another media creation that really steams me. In less than two weeks, our local paper has repeated this claim along with the VPC's "study" that alleges that Texas permit holders are 66% more likely to be arrested than "others." I wrote a letter to the editor with all the numbers, but they didn't publish it. Complained when they repeated their claim, but they didn't respond. We all know that politicians lie to one extent or another during campaigns, but when the press starts lying to advance the cause of a particular candidate, that's pretty disgusting.

If there ever is a shooting war in this country, there's going to be a lot of perforated editors.

The name of the game in todays world of competing ideas is control of the news cycle. At all costs get a position stated in a prominant newspaper (such as Texas troubles with CCW) and run with it. Only later will the corrections come out and if they are acknowledged they will receive only scant notice. The error will receive deep short coverage. It will not receive front page coverage. "We Published Incorrect Information" will not appear. By that time the publisher is on to another factually wrong story.

Fewer people read corrections than they do the original wrong information. The media knows this and exploits it.
