I am new to hunting.
I have a .308 that is looking for a new deer.
Anyone with tips on where to go? Public land please I am near decatur.
I am looking at mallard creek. I would also like to hunt boar...

Bankhead is good. I've always seen deer there. Skyline is pretty good, too. The terrain at Skyline is a bit more rugged, though.

Sam Murphy WMA

Sam Murphy (formerly LaMarion) WMA seems to have pretty high deer numbers.
I have not studied their regs this year, but a fair number of hunts also. Bankhead (Black warrior WMA) NF is a huge area, and several guys I know up here in the NW counties in the Florence area go to Bankhead to hunt. The public land hunts in AL can be crowded, and special regs and permits often apply, do your homework.

I will tell you that Freedom Hills is a bust this year. A mast crop failure, and the state not planting food plots till late, allegedly not fertilizing same, and a drought to boot, has had a huge effect on the deer herd. Most deer have moved off public land onto clubs and leases that invested in their food plots and are reaping the benefits. Worst year EVER seeing deer for me this year bowhunting Freedom Hills WMA.

Darn coyotes EVERYWHERE which does not help fawn survival.
