New Hornady Critical Duty pistol ammunition....

Hi gang;
Just wanted to know if any TFLers shot or saw the new line of Critical Duty Hornady ammunition.
They have a banner ad on www.GunsAmerica.com .
The specs & ballistics look great for a duty/protection sidearm but I think it might be a bit much for some applications(home defense, malls, office bldgs, apt complexes, etc).

What say you, Lash LaRue?
;)

Ammo selection is still pretty slim but it does look like good ammo. IF they ever make any 357 magnum I may try it out.

Looks like Hornady simply made a hotter and heavier version of the Critical Defense in order to make it perform better in FBI protocol tests (poor performance through intermediate barriers was one of the main complaints about Critical Defense).

Basically a lot of extra technology and it still doesn't perform in any way that would make me give up my 147gr Winchester Ranger Bonded ammo.

Guns and Ammo article recently about it, they seem to think its the greatest thing since smokeless powder. They probably get a lot of ad dollars from Hornady though.

The polymer post in the center is intriguing though, I can see how that might make a difference.

I don't see the advertisement anymore (they probably have them in a rotation) but Hornady usually makes great ammuntion. Another poster said it looks like Critical Defense with a hotter load. If that's the deal, then I would venture to say it should perform well. The FTX (and similar) bullet design seems to perform it's intended purpose. All the tests I've seen show it does expand without getting clogged with either thick fabric or animal fur. They seem to load fine in guns that aren't fond of HP ammo too. I think it'll be a winner.

If anyone can point me to a site that actually has this "in stock" for sale, I would consider it a gift from the big fat-guy with a white beard!

Ho ho ho...

I'd check www.Discountammosales.com . I never bought any new rounds from the web company but I also saw they MAY have Critical Duty ammunition in stock.

Im looking for the new 135gr +P 9x19mm so don't buy it all!

ps: I also think you might be able to buy directly from Hornady but you'd need to contact them about it.
I'm surprised the big names like SG Ammo, Ables & Grafs do not stock more.

new issue of Handguns magazine...

I read over a article about Hornady & the new Critical Duty handgun ammunition in Handguns magazine.
The detailed item stated the rounds were R&Ded to improve .40/9x19mm specs with the strict FBI standards.

The 135gr 9mm & 175gr .40S&W handgun rounds did very well with auto glass, metal, fabric(clothing material), etc.
A local gun shop near me(listed as a Hornady.com vendor) said more Critical Duty ammunition will be for sale in 01/02 2012.
For now I plan to carry Golden Saber bonded 124gr +P JHPs/9x19mm or the great Ranger T 127gr +P+ JHP.
I may buy a used LE trade-in .40 to carry concealed in 2012, so Im in no big rush for the Critical Duty 175gr .40S&W round.

Hornady certainly invests a LOT into marketing. That said and haters notwithstanding, they make high quality ammo and I'm sure these would be good performers. I would definitely NOT pay more for this than Gold Dot or HST or Ranger, however.
