New holster

I decided that it was finally time to try a Milt Sparks Summer Special -

I've wanted one for a long time, but already have a couple of Galcos that are real similar in design, so I haven't got around to it until now.

I contacted Milt Sparks Holsters inc. and learned that it could and probably would be a 6 month wait

I told them that I didn't know if I wanted to wait that long, and they told me to try Brownells.

So I called, and they had some in stock. I ordered 3 days ago, and got it today. Brownells customer service is outstanding. They were very friendly and processed and shipped my order really fast. And oh yeah, the holster is pretty awesome too :D

It came out to $101.24 with shipping -

I haven't carried it yet, does anyone else have one? Has anyone ever had any problems with it?

Don't mean to put down the Milt Sparks holster at all. I have borrowed a Summer Special and used it to carry my 5" 1911. Fine carry. On the other hand I regularly carry my 5" 1911 in a Royal Guard by Galco (pic) and as far as carry is concerned can't see that the MP is at all better. FWIW!

Carried it for a while today, and I am very pleased with it.

It's the most comfortable IWB holster I've ever bought. I still love my Galcos - but man this holster is awesome. Can't wait to break it in.

Worth every penny.

Just a warning for you Royal Guard owners, if you sweat, I'd start looking for something else, its a sweat sponge.

This was the last one I used before switching to kydex (I used a couple, usually two in rotation during the summer months). Thats about a months worth of use on a "new" holster in the pic. The duct tape on the back was a feeble attempt at stopping sweat from soaking the holster.

Rough out leather is the last thing you want if you sweat. Standard leather aint all that great either.

On a positive note for Sparks, I've been using their VMII's for a couple of years now, except for the summer/warmer months, and they work very well. They have been one of the more comfortable and stable holsters I've used. Their quality and craftsmanship are well worth the wait and/or extra money they demand.

Good rig!

Excellent leather, good company too! I use a Summer Special as well, I am very pleased with it. (note: I make holsters for a living!).

The Sparks Summer Special is a great holster as are all of Tony's holsters. I use a very similar model (#1 Heritage) for CCW in both 4" and 5" 1911 models. Note that the Heritage model is made using two layers of leather (smooth side out, smooth side in) with a waterproof membrane between. See suggestions on Milt Sparks website re breaking in and caring for their holsters.

I looked up the Heritage after reading your post, and It looks really nice. Do you know if any secondary dealers carry that particular model?

Brownells does not carry the Heritage, and once again, it will be 6 months or longer if I go directly through Milt Sparks.

I really like the Summer Special 2 that I bought, and because I'll be carrying that one, The wait on the Heritage wouldn't be all that bad. I don't know, I might order one.

I have not had any success finding the Heritage in stock at a secondary dealer. Have ordered mine direct and waited the 5 months for delivery. To me, the Heritage is worth the wait. It is my favorite holster because of 1) the smooth lining, 2) waterproof membrane between leather layers, and 3) small footprint on belt (like Summer Special).
