New HK USP45f - First 200 rounds

Hey guys!

Just got back from the range where I fired *my* USP45f for the first time. Unfortunately I do have to work today so I only put 200 rnds through it.

Prior to firing it I cleaned it with the MPro-7 cleaner and put Tetra gun grease on the rails and on the inside top of the slide where the chamber end of the barrel meets it. I wiped the whole thing down *lightly* with CLP.

Ok... My first time ever firing this weapon, I step up to the in-door lane (lane 16) that I was assigned to and loaded up both 10rnd clips with 185gr flat-point FMJ. I put two orange ("A") dot targets onto the taget trolley and run it out to 25ft. Taking a deep breath, I slide a magazine home and rack the slide, depressing the de-cocker in order to start with a double-action shot.

I take aim (one eye closed this clip) and pull the trigger. BLAM! It works! I know this sounds silly, but all kinds of wierd thoughts always go through my head the first time I ever fire a new, unproven weapon. What if there is something wrong with it? What if some customer before me took it apart and messed something up? What if...?

Consoled by the weapons proper functioning, I procede to fire off the remaining 9 rounds, placing 7 of them in an ever widening ragged one-inch L-shapped hole just left of center. The other three are almost touching slightly lower and right. Total group size at 25 feet in my amateur hands is 2 3/4inches.

I fire into the other target and bring it back, setting up another round of targets and load up more magazines.

ACCURACY
Again, I am no expert, (although I shot "expert" with the .45 in the army) but I managed to keep slow fire groups at 25' at under 3 inches if I tried really hard. 5 inches was the group size if I fired at one per second (range max). All this was from standing, no rest. The weapon was not as accurate as the Sig P220 that I fired last month, but I was satisfied that if I could point it at a hostile I would hit. At 50feet, slow fire, I kept all 10 rounds on the paper, but my group size was like 6 inches. I am sure this was as much me as the gun. Not a match gun, but a very servicable self-defense gun.

TRIGGER
The single action trigger was nice! I have heard people complain about the HK trigger, but I was just as happy with the single action on the USP as I was with the Sig triggers and the S&W triggers. It was crisp and predictable.

The double action trigger was another story. It is long, gritty, catchy, unpredictable and jerky. In a word, Horrible. My Ruger P94DC was better. All the sigs I fired were better. Even the range USP's that I rented were better (probably because they had been fired more).

I will definately address that. Is it unsafe? no. Is it unusable? No. Is is less than wonderful? Yes. This is a $650-$700 handgun. The double action trigger doesnt feel like it. Luckily the range that I was at (same place I bought the gun) is also a certified HK repair facility and has a good gunsmith. We tried all the other NIB USP's and they all have the same issue. Looks like it will not be a repair but an action job of some sort.

RELIABILITY
I know that 200 rounds is not a huge test of reliability but I wanted to test it out as much as possible. So I tried limp-wristing it - left handed, right handed, one handed, ejection port up, ejection port down, everywhich way except upsidedown (seemed too dangerous).

So what happened? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. No misfires. No stovepipes. No failure to chamber. No problems. At all.

Nice.

Now it's time to see how it will do dirty. I plan on putting up to 750 rounds through it before cleaning it unless it has a non-ammo related failure to feed.

FINAL IMPRESSIONS
I am glad I purchased this pistol. I would be ecstatic except for the double action trigger. I know that this is a gun designed for reliability in a dirty environment, and this is exactly why I purchsed it. I still wish, though, that HK would have put just a little bit more effort in smoothing out that trigger. It's accuracy in stock trim is good. It's reliability under various angles and grips was impeccable right out of the box. It has a durable construction that inspires confidence.

Even after only 200 rounds I would not have a problem trusting my defense to this gun. I would, however, like to put some JHP's through it(Can't do that at our indoor range).

Would I buy it agian? You betcha! Will I still hope that HK improves the NIB double action trigger? You Betcha!

This horrible DA trigger is the main reason
I didn't buy HK USP. In regard to limp wristling .....as you say, "LOL", where is the hell is all this physics? Should be there...Seems like this particular pistol was "well" designed...

Sh*t, seems like this "limp wristling" really
got me, what should I do? In any case, please
excuse me...

I wouldn't worry too much about the double action trigger on any auto of that type....the first one's just to cock it anyway!
