Hello fellas. I bought my first rifle 6 months ago. Before that all I had were pellet guns. I didn't want to spend much on a rifle in case I lost interest in it. I bought a Savage .17 cal HMR. Came with a Bushnell scope. Out the door brand new for just around $400. And although its a small cal its quite a step up from a pellet gun and one screamin round at 2,550 fps. I've enjoyed getting it sited in at 100 yards at the range. My 10 and 12 year old daughters can shoot it and not be scared of it because the recoil is so small. I do enjoy it and will move up to something bigger and more long range. But its a great gun and very accurate.
This is the best I've been able to do at 100 yards with it.

Looks like a Marlin of some kind. Good shooting but for that little flyer. Yes, shooting is fun. Ya know, you don't HAVE to get anything "bigger" -- don't feel like you are supposed to. It isn't like graduating...

May I suggest you start shooting in one of the self-scored NRA qualification programs? You shoot at the appropriate targets according to the rules, score yourself, and track your performance. Really helps you focus and is fun. You buy a patch and earn higher grades as you progress...

Find the Light Rifle Qualification courses of fire in the link below for example...

Congrats, enjoy, be safe, and welcome!

Its a Savage Arms model 93R 17. I know Marlin also makes them. I think Remington or Winchester makes the only center fire .17 cal with a velocity of 4,000 fps. The reason I'll move up to something bigger would be to do some hog hunting. Although I have heard of guys using it as long as you hit them right behind the ear, it might be a little lite. But who knows.

Welcome to TFL and that's good shooting no matter how you slice it. The fact that you're (hopefully) giving your daughters a good first impression to shooting is even more admirable.

The only recommendation I'd make is to pick up something in .22 LR (like a Savage Mk II TR, just saying :D) and practice, practice, practice. Due to the low cost of .22, you'd get a lot of training for the price with that cartridge.

Welcome & congrats, nice looking rifle not bad shooting either.I think its great you have the girls learning to shoot. I had a blast teaching mine to shoot 20 years ago & she still shoots.have fun be safe :D

welcome to the forum hrick...

You actually moved "up" into a rifle I'm looking to move "down" into.

I am encouraged by targets I've seen, like yours, that indicate a really fine level of accuracy for this little rimfire.
I've been reloading for just over 40 years now, and could find any number of .17's to shoot and reload, but the performance of the HMR just seems to be difficult to beat, at the price you pay for it.

When you get ready to get something bigger (for hogs) it would be difficult to go wrong with a levergun in 30-30. You can find them all day long in pawnshops for around 300 dollars (less, if you're lucky) and the basic wally-world ammo is pretty cheap. 5 or 6 rounds in the magazine makes a pretty good hog gun..

You think they are fun on paper, wait til you try them on rabbits! Youll get a giggle with every pull of the trigger. :D

The damage done by that tiny little bullet, is truly amazing.

Hahaha! Yeah I've seen the videos. Exploading rabbits. Or bunny busting. Some of them fall right over. And some of them just explode. I did notice that when I got it sited in with ballistic tips rounds and switched to hollow points that the hollow points would always be a little high and to the right. So just stuck with the ballistic tips. Last time I was at the range the guy right next to me was shooting a Remington .338 ultra mag. That thing packed such a punch that every time I was ready to pull the trigger he would fire and the shock wave would hit me hard enough that I had to resite in the target. Hahaha! We both swapped rifles. He tried mine out and I tried his out. He was shock that there was almost no recoil. And I told him that his kicks so hard that I think I lost a filling. Lol!
