Hi all:

Just discovered this site after my new purchase today. I'm not a gun guy at all, but ran across a gun today that I really liked and took it on trade. Need some help with what I have and if it's a good item. I'd really just like to know the age of the gun.

Here's what I can tell by a rookie observation.

Smith and Wesson model 648. Stainless. 22 mag . Owner said it was a big frame model. Never fired, hand engraved with scrimshaw grips with a duck or quail on it. Not lazer done, but hand engraved and hand engraved on the scrimshaw. ( I don't like the grips, but I did like the engraving on the gun) The gun wasn't factory engraved, but was done for the last owner by an artist in Ohio. Not total coverage, but done tastefully.

Is there a way to tell the age of this gun by the numbers? As I open the cylinder, the numbers read B FA100 Came with a presentation box, original box and original grips. Paid 400 bucks. I know the engraving probably doesn't help it, but I liked it. Bought it to keep, not sell, but still would like to know what it is.

Thanks in advance for the help !

You have a medium framed, known as the K-frame, revolver that is called the Magnum Rimfire Stainless. By it's serial number it probably was made around 1990. The $400 pricetag is about right for a stock model in excellent condition.

Thanks for the quick reply. As I said, the original grips are included in this deal, but I don't have them yet. What should the grips be ?? Wood, or rubber ? Any suggestions on what I should put on them. I'm not a shooter, but might take a few pot shots with it just for fun. Just can't handle the scrimshaw look. Thanks for clearing up the frame questions, was looking at grips online and noticed all the different versions. Will any K frame grip work on this particular model ? Thanks again for the speedy reply. Sorry for the stupid questions. !

Your revolver should be a "square butt" configuration. The original stocks/grips should be a wood fingergrooved "Combat" style. When purchasing stocks/grips for it remember to specify "square butt" as there are "round butt" models for that frame size. Also the L-frame and the K-frame have the same grip frame size so you will see the stock/grip size listed as "K/L frame".

Edited..any square butt (SB) K/L frame grip will fit your revolver.

Thanks for the speedy and courteous reply to a gun dummy !! Any suggestions of anything I should do to a gun of this age that has never been fired prior to shooting it? Should anything be oiled, cleaned, etc. ? Since it's not really a big ticket item, a few rounds through it shouldn;t hurt it, huh ?
