New guy with a whats it worth?

Hello all,

I am not a big collector. I run into good deals with friends and family every now and then. In my collection I have a Glock 22 .40 (love it), a Ruger P95 (great also) and the newest addition is a 1965 Colt Python.357 in Nickel.

I am looking for a good market value for this old revolver. I did some research on the net and found them from $800-$1200. The only issue is they didn't appear to be as old as mine or have the longer barrel.

My gun is a Colt Python.357 6" with Nickel Plating. It has it's origonal box, warrante card, "Handling the Handgun" guide. Origonal target signed and dated by the shooter from Colt. The gun has been fired. However it doesn't appear to be fired a lot. I am attaching pics. so maybe they will help with value.

Thanks
Ryan

The $800 to $1200 price holds true for your gun.

Since it is in great shape AND has the original box and papers, the price would be on the upper end of the price range.

Since you didn't mention it, I'm assuming the circular Colt screwdriver is missing from the box.
This is a circular blued steel disk with three blades. On one side is the Colt pony, on the other is the serpentine Colt logo.

The actual value depends on how much a buyer will pay.
Typically, nickle Pythons bring very slightly lower prices than blued guns.

Pythons in general, and nickel Pythons in particular are hot items in some parts of the country, and non-sellers in others.

In other words: The only way to get a definitive price would be to sell the gun on one of the online gun auctions.

Failing that, I'd rate it at $1100 to $1200.

Yea, I definately made a wise choice then. Lets just say I have an investment now. ;) One that could pay off well if I need to get rid of it.

Unfortunately I do not have the screwdriver... :(

Anyone else have any other comments?

How about a police issues .357 I think it is a S&W. It has the clip on the bottom of the handle and everything. It is in a box. However I don't think it is origonal. Although it does come with papers and some cleaning tool I think. Do you think $250-$300 is a good deal?

I also have access to 2 old Darengers. They are a matched set. One has the blueing pealing off and the other one looks new. I think someone shot one of them only. have no idea on age other than old and I have no idea on value. It is a single shot .22 the barrel twists from the handle sideways to load it.

My brother scored a nice 80's colt King Cobra 8" .357 in stainless. It is in like new condition and we also have no idea on what it is worth.

Sorry for all the questions? This is very helpful

Dfariswheel is one of the Colt experts around here and usually not much can be added to his comments.
As to the service revolver question if by clip you mean a lanyard ring then not many US departments used them with the .357 mag revolvers. It could very well be a re-import that was used by another country like Canada. The Mounties made good use of the lanyard. It's hard to estimate a price without knowing the make, maker, or condition.
The King Cobra would be in the $500 price range. IMO the 8" barrel wasn't that popular and that would hold the price down as other KCs have sold higher.

WOW Coool. I got one of the experts on the first reply. Good Deal.

As for the Police Gun. It was supposed to of been purchaced off of an actual Police man that carried the gun on his Harly. The guy that has the gun is a big time Harly man and that is why he wanted it. It don't make since to me. he has the papers and a cleaning tool for it. I am not familiar with Police issue guns back in the day, however I wouldn't think they would have had all the papers etc. to go with the gun. I have no idea. It could be a made up story he tells for all I know. He is a Harly and anything Harley collector. So once he saw a police issue gun for sale he may have picked it up and came up with a good story. I'll see if I can come up with some better information on it.

Thanks All. :D

I dont really know myself, but if I were you, id mail in that warranty card before its to late! :D Most warranties are void if the card is not mailed in within 30 days of buying the gun!

Wonder how far down range that target was when the guy shot that group? Thats the job I want when I retire...to sit there and shoot all day, and get paid for it....what a dream job!

I was just looking at your pics again, is that gun unfluted? The cylinder appears to be solid..

Python.jpg

I bought this Python a couple of weeks back for $600. It came with no box, no nothing, but it's finish was impeccable. It had been fired. I hope I didn't get taken. :o

How about a police issues .357 I think it is a S&W. It has the clip on the bottom of the handle and everything. It is in a box. However I don't think it is origonal. Although it does come with papers and some cleaning tool I think. Do you think $250-$300 is a good deal?

Here's my formula when trying to remember prices on S&W K frames. Start out with $200.
Subtract $50 if it's .38spl.
Add $25 if it's stainless steel.
Add $25 if it has adjustable sights.
Add $25 if it's a snubby.
After that I adjust out for finish wear and grips.
In your area you may have to subsitute $250 for the base figure to get accurate results.

A six inch King Cobra goes for $350 around here, and possibly $400 if it's the high polish finish. A four inch barrel will bring a little more, the 8 inch barrel (?!!) a little less. The CKC is a very nice revolver. Grip choice is limited and pricey.
Here's Mine.

Your Colt Python!

XavierBreath:

No, you didn't get taken on your 4-inch Colt Python! Prices vary all over the Country for these Python's! Here in CA, your Python(Even without box, papers or anything!)would sell for $850 to $875(And, the prices on Python's are constantly escalating!)! BTW, your Python looks very nice indeed! Congratulations! :D

See the following picture of my 4-inch Python, that cost me $850, here in CA(With no box or papers, either!):

:(

I'm very happy with my Python. I bought it for $830.00. I was willing to pay up to $900.00. I wouldn't let it go for under $1,000.00 and maybe not even for that price.

I'm having difficulty understanding why the prices on the Python are so high and prices on the Colt Lawman and Trooper are so low. It is difficult to get even $350.00 for them. I bought the Lawman for $269.00, and the Trooper for just over $300.00. Both are great guns.

I'm not sure what fluted means so I can't answer the question.

However, the test shots were fired at 15 yards with a 6 Oclock hold. That is what the test sheet says. You cant make much out with the pics I posted.
