New guy, new gun, probably old question.

Hello All,
I’m new to Firearms and to the forum. I recently put a Walther P99 on layaway and was wondering if I should clean it when I finally take position or if I should just use it as is. I have read in other sources opinions both ways.
Also, can anyone recommend clear, concise pistol maintenance books or other basic resources that you find particularly valuable?
Thanks for the help.

DTQ,

I would think you should clean your new gun before you shoot it. It's bound to have some type of oil in the barrel from packing. Theres possibly some grease and gunk inside as well.
A good field strip and cleaning couldn't hurt anyway.

Secondly, since you are new to firearms, I would recommend that you become an NRA member. http://www.nra.org

You can also purchase some really nice books from the NRA like the NRA Firearms Assembly Guides. http://www.nrastore.com/nra/product.aspx?productid=SS 01590-60

A new gun should come with an owner's manual giving basic cleaning instructions. You might be tempted to take the pistol apart more than the instructions recommend. Unless/until you have more experience, I strongly recommend you resist that temptation.

Great Idea! I hadn’t thought of the NRA. That’s the type of info I’m looking for. Thanks.

Jim,

Thanks, I will resist the temptation. in the past temtation was the only thing I couldn't resist, but I'll head your warning.
