New guy, new gun, new CWL

I've been lurking for a while and here's my first post. :)

I live in Florida and got my concealed weapons license just yesterday so I had to celebrate by ordering a S&W 340PD today (got some good info from TFL that helped me decide on that one). The attached pic was borrowed from the S&W site.

Having grown up in Kalifornia, it's nice to live in a state now where a law-abiding (licensed) citizen can actually carry a weapon for self-defense if desired. :)

congratulations on the ccw license, what kind of defensive rounds will you be using?
Thank you.

I should have mentioned when I checked in that I know just a tiny fraction of what many on this site know about this stuff... :)

I've never shot this particular revolver, but I've read plenty about its "interesting" recoil, therefore I expect to use only .38 ammunition -- I'm not sure about the details of which kind yet, so advice is welcome. (I already have a Ruger Police Service-Six .357 revolver -- even with its much greater weight I don't particularly enjoy its recoil with .357 magnum ammo.)

I agree, michael. I used to fear recoil and flinch at the trigger every time, but now, the more a gun kicks, the more fun it is to shoot. At least for me. It's a challenge to control the flinch, but once you do, you'll have it made. I'll always fear the .500, however...but man, I'd sure love to shoot one someday.

NICE gun you got there!

Congrats and nice gun. Remington makes medium velocity 357s for snubs. Not as bad as full powered loads in 357 but more powerful than 38s. Just ask your gun dealer if he has them.

I just got my carry permit from the sheriff yesterday too (Minnesota)! I also went out and bought a new minigun - a Kahr PM9.

I've also got a Smith J-frame with 2-1/8" barrel. Finally settled on the 135 gr Speer Gold Dot HP that are all the rage these days, as they're specially designed for optimum performance in short barrels. They're potent, but should be manageable in your revolver.

Thanks all for the nice welcome!

You need to shoot one full load of 357 .Just to say you did it.
OK, you're right. I'll bring band-aids, or aspirin, or whatever it is I'm supposed to bring for that. :)

NICE gun you got there!
Thank you, I'm looking forward to getting it this Friday!

Thanks for that info -- I'm learning so many useful things here! (I didn't even realize that there were different "sizes" of .357 cartridges. :) )

Thanks for that info as well. (and congrats on getting your permit!)

nice gun...always caught my eye as a pocket gun/BUG...not a primary weapon...wouldnt want to shoot .357 mags out of it for sure...

hope you like it...muzzle flash at night would be a big big con...(hd gun? 870 comes to mind)

i see you live in tampa...i just moved from there to the hell hole of ft. lauderdale...nah its not that bad...at least where i live, but go 10miles south and your in cuba...

I have to shoot at least some .357 mags because of a prior commitment (see previous post)

My current HD gun is a Ruger police service-six .357. Your mention of 870 reminds me that I need to get another gun, however. (But I need to figure out how to safely store it first, I suppose.) You got me thinking, so I went to the Remington site and now I have a hankering for the 870 Marine Magnum, which I could use for HD as well as "BD" (boat defense).

I live just a few miles west of the range you're talking about. I've never shot there (but I did go in there once to inquire about CCW courses.) The guy behind the counter wasn't overly friendly, but maybe he was just having a bad day. I guess I'll have to try it since it is my closest range. Give me a shout next time you're going to be there!

Enjoy Ft. Lauderdale -- I've never been to Ft. Lauderdale proper, only to Sunrise, which I don't think is quite the real deal. :)
