New Guy Needs Some Help

Hello there I am brand new to using traditional style fire arms. I had always wanted to try deer hunting with one and finally have purchased a gun. It is a 50 caliber CVA Frontier with double trigger. It appears to be in good condition although the rear trigger doesnt seem to have a function. From what I have read this is a 1:32 twist rifle. My first question is how much powder would I need to knock a whitetail down. Next I understand this is a cap lock is this different from percussion. lastly what will I need to operate this weapon. Patches? Bal? powder? caps? Any feedback would be grately appreciated thanks guys!!!!

New problem I took off the barrel to examine it and while it was off I pulled the hammer back which is now stuck at half cocked the main trigger has no effect to release.
:(

You're not going to be able to pull the trigger at half cock unless you pull the hammer back enough to disengage the sear. Can you pull it back to full cock? BTW the rear trigger is a set trigger. Once the rifle is cocked you pull the rear trigger to set the front one. Setting it gives it a lighter pull. You don't have to set it for the front trigger to work tho. It's just a harder pull.

back the screws for the lock halfway out then bump the heads lightly to push the lock out of it's mortise. Then take the screws out and see what's going on with the lock. If you cant figure it out post some good clear pics of the workings and we'll see if we can help.

*Sorry, Hawg, I didn't mean to tread on your answer there. I should probably read all the posts before replying!*

Just a guess but you may have a "Double set trigger". What this does is allow a normal trigger use, or a very light trigger pull.
If it's working well you cock fully & pull the trigger to fire normally. to get at the light trigger function cock & pull the other trigger. There should be a light *click* as the trigger sets, then to fire pull the other trigger. Try full cocking then setting the triggers with an empty rifle & see if that is what you have. Could you have pulled the other trigger while half-cocked? That would probably get the mechanisms locked up internally.

Lots of info on double set triggers here:

**DISCLAIMER**
Use all the usual safety rules when messing with the trigger, if its set it will be very VERY light a real "hair trigger".
