New Guy M27-2 question

Hi all, This is my first post , you guys are a wealth of information & real opinions so I joined. I like to know if a s & w 27-2, 83/8" barrel, recessed & pinned, Serial # S287XXX worth $ 450.00? I don't believe the herrett target grips are original & the rib has been drilled/tapped for a scope. The blueing is perfect with the exception of a faint cylinder line. It locks up tight & trigger is unaltered, very crisp. The scope mounting holes were done nicely by a gunsmith & comes with blued filler screws when the mount is removed. I was told the s prefix means a older & better year for this model. In your opinion is this gun worth it or should I talk the seller into throwing in the 2x leupold scope & mount also? Thanks in advance for your opinons. P.S. Vulcan was my favorite gun to shoot in the army

Kind of a hard question to answer, V. A purist might be put off by the scope mount issues, so an unaltered 27 would be worth more to them. The "S" prefix predates the "N" prefix, but since you're describing a M27, as opposed to a pre-model numbered revolver, the difference in value is not much, if any. Of greater significance is what part of the country you're in. Of primary importance is whether you really, really want the gun. Gun deals are like buses. If you miss one, another will come along sooner or later.

I paid $350 yesterday for a six inch 27-2 98%, ser # S311xxx. Guy at same show had a five inch 27, not a mark on it, in presentation box for $500. Too high for me.

I paid around $350 for one last December, 27-2, 8 3/8" with a B-Square scope mount and 4x scope. $450 sounds high to me, but if they're a rare find in your area that may be what they're going for.

Pretty high for a M27-2 that will never have much collector interest do to the drilling AND non-original grips. As others have posted here a great deal depends on which state you're in. ( that's why many list which one.) In some parts on the country 450 is LOW but in most it's 50-100 high. I'm sure it'll be a dandy shooter so .......shoot it ! Best...dewey

Generally speaking the S serial will bring a few more dollars. Generally speaking the extra holes will knock the value a bit with some and a lot with others (I would not even consider it). The asking prices on 27-2s have been in the $400-$500 range lately on the auction sites and some seem to be selling that high. The people over at the S&W forum get snippy when I suggest that $400 is really pushing it for a nice (say 95%) N frame. They think paying $600 is just fine. The last M27 I bought was an 8 & 3/8 blued one in the presentation box for $315. I was willing to go $350. But in last week or so I have been outbid on a nickeled 4" M27 (I went $401 it sold for $406) and a 5" nickeled Florida HP M27 (500 made and I have one, thought a pair would be cool) but I dropped out at $311 (went for $316).

Bottom line is if you like the gun buy it.

I passed on a really nice 27 with the 8 3/8 barrel that was priced at $425. It did eventually sell, but it was all original and had the box etc.. I did buy a 6" model for $300 not as nice, but had box and papers too. Good condition with a few very light scratches. Talk them out of the scope and mounts and make a deal. Are you a shooter or a collector?

thanks

Thanks for the input guys, I got fifty dollars off of the price & the scope & mount to boot. I plan to use it as a target shooter so its ok even without the box & papers. I can't get over the blueing! Its mirrorlike & goes nice with the caseharden trigger & hammer. Need to change the grip, The walnut Herretts don't feel right for my hands. Think rubber grips would look tacky on it? I love the uncle mike's on my s&w 649. Let me know if you have a recommendation for target grips. Thanks to all.
