I registered because I like to shoot always have. I thought this would be a good forum to get info from. I have a ruger redhawk 7.5 stainless with pachmayr grips. I have never shot the gun with the stock wood grips. They just didnt seem right for the gun. I have a semi-auto stainless s&w 9 mm da. and its got the same brand grips, I think the black grips look awsome with the stainless. Well maybe one day I will figure out what the deal is with warnings of not posting a revolver in the semi class, Im new so I hope I can get things figured out and not break any rules..What i came on here for was to learn about ammo. I bought some hollow points today at bi-mart that had somed rubber or? in the point. I get it home and it is a 44 special box -not the 44 mag that im used to buying. From what i figure is that people buy them for less recoil??? I like to have a superpowerfull round every once in a while and my normal rounds to be powerful enough to kick hard !!!! Its just more fun for me. As far as protection factors, a powerful round with a lot of kick probabley wont matter at 15 or 20 feet. So I think im going to take the 44 special ammo back tomorrow and get the more powerfull hollow points(same price). well I look forward to checking out this great forum, thanks Wes

Most ammo sales are final, so why not shoot your 44 Specials? You can buy the Magnums next time if you want.

As far as what you bought... is it Hornady brand? They make a 44 Special with the FTX bullet.

And ammo selection goes in the General Handguns section. But 44 is typically revolver ammo, so maybe they'll give you a pass on this one.

Welcome...

yes, a lot of shooters like to shoot .44 spl in a revolver chambered in .44 mag ( and yes, its because they will give you significantly less recoil )....

...same issue on shooting a .38 spl in a gun chambered in .357 mag....

.44 spl and .44 mag are the same diamater ..../ the .44 spl are shorter in overall length ...and have less velocity in general and will recoil less ( and they're usually about $5 a box cheaper than .44 mag ).

ammo purchase

Welcome to TFL. Gotta watch what the person on the other end of the counter hands you. At least this was special instead of magnum. A caliber mix up could be more dangerous.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for asking our advice.

They also buy them because they are better against thin-skinned game. 44 Magnum is better against thick-skinned game (ballistically speaking, people are considered thin-skinned)

It matters a lot. At any distance. Overpenetration is a problem in social shooting situations. 44 mag is pretty much guaranteed to overpenetrate thin-skinned game and probably penetrate through whatever is behind the primary target as well.

As Brian Pfleuger said, you may not be able to return the ammo. Ask to speak with the manager. A clerk (even at the returns desk) will probably not have the authority to say "yes". Of course, you have the receipt with a recent date and you might get lucky with a clerk who does not know to say "no".

The reason most stores give about not taking return on ammunition is that there are liability issues of the buyer making the return has switched it out for something else. If the store does take the refund there is a good chance they will eat the loss of the sale 100% and send it back to the factory for destruction. It makes sense from a legal and statistical/financial standpoint.

Posting on the wrong forum happens sometimes. Forgivable. But 44 Special vs 44 Magnum seems OK for the revolver forum as well as the General Handgun. The first improvement I would suggest is to use paragraphing. Breaking your thoughts into related paragraphs helps your readers. The white space is helpful, too.

Good luck, and again, welcome to the forum and thanks for asking our advice.
