New guy introduction

Hey all,
I just made my first firearm purchase. I am a total gun noob so I did a ton of research before I made a purchase, and most of the useful info that I found came from this site so I figured why not join.

The main reason that I bought it was that I picked up a pellet gun about a year ago to get rid squirrels at my mom's house and had way more fun with it than I expected. The excuse that I used to finally spend the money was that she now has an armadillo problem at her house in central Ga. They are tearing up the grass and garden, and chasing her dogs.

Anyway, long story short- I picked up a gently used Walther G22 with a few accessories and extra mags for a great deal from a guy on GunBroker. Like I said- I am completely new to this, so I'll try to keep the idiotic questions to a minimum by searching old threads, but no promises.

Let me be the first to say WELCOME! To both the site and to ownership; that G22 look SWEET!

And this is a great site and you will learn a lot from these guys!

Happy Hunting!

Hey, thanks for the welcome guys. My G22 should arrive tomorrow, so I'll pick up some ammo and update with more pictures when I actually have it here.

That being said, I plan on picking up some inexpensive "regular" 20 grain rounds for target shooting and getting used to the gun, but I'm not positive on what might be best for armadillos.

I'm torn between Aguila SSS 60 grain (subsonic), and the Aguila Super Maximum 30 grain hyper velocity hollow point. I'm not sure if the issue with armadillos' shells is more of a penetration or transferred energy issue. Obviously the 30 grain round moves a lot quicker, but the heavier SSS transfers more energy.

After reading about different types of bullets, I originally planned on buying a few boxes of fully jacketed pointed rounds for armadillos (something similar to the 5.56 NATO round), but then I found out that those do not exist in 22.lr. So much for my research.

My concern is that if I shoot one of these little bastards and the round bounces off of it's shell I'm going to be angry! hahaha

If any of you guys have first-hand .22lr vs armadillo advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

The guy at the gun store told me that I would have to get head shots to kill them because the .22lr round is not powerful enough to penetrate their armor. I suspected he may have been a moron, but then again who am I to judge? I had just asked him where the FMJ .22lr ammo was. hahahaa

Update: I just took the G22 out shooting for the first time, and holy crap it was fun!! :D
I can not believe how much more fun it is to shoot than my pellet gun that I had before. Recoil is non-existent, accuracy is beyond incredible (I can't wait to put a scope on this thing), and the rate of fire was literally as fast as I could pull the trigger. While going through about 350 rounds, we only had 2 malfunctions- one of the 60 grain Aguila SSS rounds didn't feed properly, and one of the regular Federal HP's stove-piped on it's way out. No complaints here.

Now the other "fun" part. I want to take good care of this thing, and like my cars I plan on maintaining it meticulously. I need to learn how to clean and lubricate this rifle properly.

I was going to buy a gun cleaning kit, but I lucked out and my best friend still had this Winchester rifle cleaning kit from when he owned a Remington 810 for a few months which he gave to me (photo attached). It looks like a pretty nice cleaning kit and it has various attachments marked ".22Cal", but I have no idea what to do with them. I'm hesitant to use those wire brushes in the barrel, but again, I have literally no idea so I figured I'd ask before I mess something up.

I already figured out how to properly disassemble the gun from the factory Walther owner's manual that came with the rifle, but if anyone could point me in the direction of a good how-to guide on cleaning this thing, I would greatly appreciate it.

Here she is a few weeks, a few bucks, and a few thousand rounds later.

Nikon ProStaff 3-9X40 scope
Millet medium scope rings
Magpul AFG2 foregrip

I'm still hunting around for a decent bipod.
When I finally got the scope sighted-in (which is waaay more complicated than I expected) this gun is amazingly accurate. I was shooting far more consistently with tighter groups than my friend was with his AR, at 75-110 meters. I have tried a ton of different types of ammo, but I've had the best luck so far with Federal match grade 40 grain round nose, and CCI Velocitor 40 grain HP's. I guess 40 grain is the sweet spot?

Long story short- I'm thoroughly addicted, and already shopping for something bigger. I'm thinking since I have a cheap plinker, I want a quality bolt gun next. Most likely chambered in 7.62mm. Possibly an AR-10.

I dont know, I need to do a lot more research before I drop that kind of dough on a rifle.
