New Guy Here- Question...

I've been a serious shooter all my life but have never really gotten into military-type firearms for my personal use. Now I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive carbine-rifle in one of the 7.62 cartridges.

In browsing some top-level info, it looks like a Romanian SAR or Chinese SK are in the ballpark for what I want. Which of these is better in terms of reliabilty, quality, workmanship, etc? In looking at photos, the SAR appears a little more well-made. What is the opinion of the experts in this forum? Thanks!

Expert?

Well an Expert I am not, but from my own experience (I am not a 2nd LT) I can say that if money is an issue, the SKS is definitely your winner. SKS's are just as reliable if not more than an AK, they are about as accurate as an AK. There are many after market accessories available, like the AK. See what I am getting at? ;) You can also feed it with stripper clips. On the downside, the high cap magazines are harder to attach to the weapon, and they tend to be kinda cheap. And they do not have the nice "look" of the AK. So either way you are walking away with a winner. Or get both!

Gooch

The SAR will have more "cachet", and will have a higher re-sale value, if you ever want to get rid of it. The Chinese SKS's quality ranged from pretty good to excreable. At one time they were selling for as little as $60.00. There are more accessories available for the SAR, and you will have 30 or 40 round magazines.
The SKS MAY be more accurate, but that's not a guarentee with Chinese guns.
My choice would be the AK/SAR.

One peice of advice: Prices on 7.62X39mm ammo have never been cheaper. Buy as many cases as you can. Prices WILL go up, and sooner or later the cheap prices will disappear. There is also the chance some bozo will stop the import of ammo.

I have an SKS (twas my first rifle!) that I really enjoy shooting, but I'm planning to sell (http://counterstrikefox.freeservers.com/skssale.html).

I compared with my friend's SAR-1. The SKS is more accurate (most SKS's do 2-4MOA, AK's 3-5MOA, at least, that is what I read). The improved accuracy may also come from the fact that AK's have really awful sights, while I really like the sights on my SKS (I don't know if my SKS's sights are stock though - I doubt it). I haven't had a jam with either rifle (and I've put thousands of Wolf rounds through the SKS). They're good fun plinkers, in my opinion. The AK's definately look better, and may be slightly more handy and compact. Only reason I am selling my SKS is because I wish to save up for a AR-15.

Thanks!
