New Gun, What to Do???

Okay, I'm buying a new Bushmaster AR 15, but need help deciding which model to get? I'm not going to frill it out or anything, I'm just going to put a cheap scope on it, and use it for varmints, i.e. coyotes, rabbits, etc.

So, which model? I going hunting in fairly dense woods quite frequently, and the ranges aren't past 100 yds. But I would like to use it later on for prairie dogs and the likes.

P.S. How much do you think I could get for a used Springfield Scout, and a Ruger mini-14 stainless ranch?

Just about any AR will work for < 100 yards. If you want to use it for varmints later at longer ranges, you might want to put a little more into it to get the accuracy you may need.

If you're not using iron sights, get a flattop. I think you might want something like a V Match, but I don't have any experience with a V Match.

I just pondered this same question and read all the posts I could. I settled on a 16 inch VMatch flat top with no sites. I intend to put a scope on it just as soon as I can make up my mind on that next. Check out http://www.youngsguns.com or http://www.gunsonsale.com and study the various mdels and options.
I don't know about used Mini 14 but I hear mags and spare parts ar pricey compared to high cap USGI surplus. As for the SA Scout used, I don't think you are going to get lucky and find one. Seems someone always knows the guys that are going to sell something and grap it up before anyone. There are a lot of Scouts on www,gunbroker.com but they run upperwards of $1400.

Also if you think about a flat top VMatch and out too say 200 yards, My opinion only Look into a Trujicon Accupiont 1.25-4x24 or an Aimpiont milspec red dot. The Trujicon is great in the fact it is variable and self luminated. I don't know much about the Aimpiont. http://www.swfa.com has them both.
The Heavy 16 inch barrel should be just right for all you have planned and a 20 to 24 may get heavy packing it for a while.
Also there are some great deal or USGM mags should you need them. I just bought 10 from a guy for $12.00 each (30 rnds) mixed assortment, extra green followers and found a place that will powder coat them all for $25.00 here in Utah.
If you want his addy email me and I will make you a deal as deal. Get your mags, your sand and take the darn things apart and send them here and I will take them in with the 10 30's, 10 20's and have them all done at once. then give me $1.25 for each new follwer and shipping and I will send them back, you pay frieght like what $4.00.

Actually, unless he likes lugging around extra weight, the standard profile barrel will be just as accurate. The only advantage of the bull barrel is it heats up slower. Of course, it also cools down slower, there's no such thing as a free lunch.
 
Go with the V-match flat top upper in either 16 or 20 inch. One thing about the flat top is that you can always add a carrying handle. You might want to get a match trigger installed as well.

to go with the carry handle you can also get a folding front iron site that mounts to the gasblock from BM.
As for the added wieght :cool:
BM 16" carbine wieghts in at a whooping 7.22 lbs
BM 16" Disapator wiehts in at 7.68 lbs
BM 16" inch Vmatch flattop (no site) comes in at 6.9 lbs :eek:
BM 20" inch VMatch flattop (no site) comes in at 8.05 lbs

So add a Aimpiont Red Dot and you come out pretty darn close.
