I'm looking for some checkered wood grips (with diamonds) for my Colt 1991. My local dealer has some real nice ones for $35, but that seems awful steep. I'm reluctant to order through the mail unless some of you kind folks can recommend a good source.

Thanks!

If they have a nice grain and finish, buy 'em.
$35 is what you'll pay ordering them, plus shipping.

Of course, you could always make your own. I have some I made out of cherry that are beautiful.

Grab them up for $35.00! That's a very good price. Most are selling in the $50-$60 range. Recently picked up a pair of Chip McCormicks diamond checkered wooden Rosewood grip panels for $39.00. Well made, very "purty",and a great value. Planned on picking up a pair of Wilson's Combat grip panels ($50+) until I accidentally run into a set of McCormicks panels at a local gun shop. I said, self, do I need to spend $50.00+ for a pair of Wilson's Grip Panels with the Wilson medallion, when I in fact, are putting them on a Kimber? Generally, you'd be paying $11.00+ just so you can have a Wilson's Combat medallion on your grip panels. You're not only giving them free advertising, but they're making a decent profit on you for the medallion. Whatever you decide, try to stay away from "off brand" manufacturers. Stick with the big names, and you'll be quaranteed great quality, and I'm sure you'd be very pleased with your purchase. Please don't misunderstand me, Wilson Combat, is without a doubt, top shelf, manufacturing some of the worlds finest aftermarket 1911 parts and accessories. It's just that "best" isn't always the "best" for all people.

Kim Ahrends and Craig Spegel make some really nice grips for the 1911. Beautiful and functional. Check that link to Brownells as they carry Ahrends line.

$35.00 too steep?? sorry.. I couldn't help it. Most high quality 1911 grips start at $35 and skyrocket from there. I would definatily check out the selection at BROWNELLS. I love the Kim Ahrends grips. I have them on all of my 1911's including my little Defender. Each set is autographed and serial numbered ( on the inside). And you won't find a nicer pair of exotic wood grips.
I REALLY LIKE the KINGWOOD and TULIPWOOD. But you Will pay for these! I think the diamond checkered grips that I bought were about $50.00 a pair. MY Ahrends SNAKEWOOD grips were about $75.00. But they were worth every penny! And if i'm not mistaken,Kim Ahrends makes the grips for WILSON COMBAT.(I THINK!)GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH!

I've been looking for a set of wooden grips to replace the plastic wraparound grips that came with my Government model. I turned down a set for $30 at the last gunshow cause I thought that was overpriced. Guess I was wrong! I'll have to go apologize to that guy next time I see him...

There's a company in Huntington Beach, CA. named MILLET (sp?) that produces some nice checkered wood grips, I believe I paid $28
for a set for my Colt 1991. The folks that said $35 for a set is reasonable are CORRECT.
Most good grips sell for a LOT more than that.
Good luck and goog hunting. :)

Spegel, Ahrends, Herrett's, and a number of other makers offer nice 1911 stocks. A 1911's stocks are just "along for the ride" anyway. They retain no parts and, since an autopistol is primarily gripped fore and aft, add little to the security of one's grip. Mainly, they should be pretty.

There is some merit to making them thinner. Both AFS Slim-Tech and Chip McCormick offer 1911 stocks that are much thinner than normal. These stocks need and are furnished with proprietary stock screws and bushings. Brownells sells these www.brownells.com

Thanks for all of the responses. I guess I am out of touch with grip prices!! Any way, I called the shop and told them to pull them off the shelf for me.
