Sounds like you have already done your homework, the problems encountered were addressed several years ago but the rumors still follow. My buddy and i have 42's that are a year old and each has fired hundreds of rounds without a malfunction or incident of any kind. The pistol is quite easy to grip, point and shoot so i can see why your wife liked it so much. Once you both fire the G 42 you will be convinced it is the pistol for you.
I carry my G 42 quite often in conjunction with my Sig P 238 which, like the G 42 is an easy to carry and shoot firearm but you must like SA only operation to love it.
now the G 43 for me is a different story and I rarely trade a firearm but that one went to another home and my Sig P 938 remains king of the micro 9's.
