New Glock 23

I've been reading the posts on this site for a long time and have finally broken down and picked up a Glock. I SWORE I would never own a "plastic gun" but a lot of research (on these forums and elsewhere), a friend with a G21, and a few hundred rounds of ammo later I'm a true convert.

Even the Glock-Thug posts (There's only two types of guns: the ones made by Glock and the ones that are barely suitable for use as paperweights) were an influence in my decision. And it made me want to register and get into the discussion.

I've been shooting for 25 years and I don't think I've liked a NIB gun as much as this one.

Thanks.

let us know how you like your glock in that model, mainly the size and the fact that it is in .40 cal. how does it shoot. would you suggest it over the full-size model 22.

I carried one form of 1911 or another for 26 years. I was as devoted a fan of the Colt/Browning design as you would find.

After cracking my third customized alloy framed Commander I too did a great deal of reasearch and ended up chosing the Glock. I don't think I like them as much as you do, but after 2 1/2 years and well over 10,000 rounds I have come to respect the ugly, thick things. They mostly work, they mostly don't break, and I can do anything to them that needs to be done without stroking the ego and stuffing the wallet of some prima donna gunsmith.

Ignatius,

Welcome to TFL. I think the Glock 19 and 23 are my favorites. I know you'll like it. Did you get it with night sights?

The Glock 23 is a very comforting thing to have on you when you even think you're in harm's way. Mine has never bobbled. I only use factory ammo and have implicit faith in the gun. I give mine a new Wolff recoil spring every year or so. It's beautiful in its simplicity.

23's are pretty sweet !!

Congrats on your new purchase...I have about 400rnds thru my G23 with no problems whatsoever...Its the perfect combo of size...power and weight. Just put some night sights on it and pick up a Insight M3 Tac light and you're good to go !! :)

I can't discuss whether I would like the G22 better or not, I've only fired one other and that was a G21. If there's a comparison, I have to say I like the compact better (fits my hand better, natural point of aim is better, and I can conceal it better) and I also noticed that the 21 seemed to fit my hand so that the slide was higher above my wrist and I did get more muzzle flip from it. Of course that just may be from going from 1911 to Glock.

For serious use (CCW, etc.) I've traditionally carried 1911's. I forayed into 9mm for a while but decided to try .40 after talking with some LEO friends of mine who use it on duty. Not much experience with it yet. Will let you know after a couple of thousand.

I didn't measure my groups today since I was just getting used to the gun but I can say that I was very pleased with consistency from 7 yds to 25 yds. The recoil is nothing like the .357 snubbie I used to carry so that's not a problem either.

I'm certainly not a Glock expert but I do think I may have a new everyday companion.

I hope you get as many years of fun and service from your new Glock as I have from the ones we own. I have a 17 that fires 9,000 to 10,000 rounds annually since 1988. I rebarrelled her in 1998 or 99. I carry it daily and when I dress up I carry a 26 and my wife carries a 27 daily. we also have a 19 that is a basic home defense gun and my bad weather backup for deer hunting. we own several other handguns, mostly revolvers which I use for hunting and plinking and a browning hi-power (my first handgun). I recently bought a colt officers model and it was traded for a kimber in 45 cal but my heart remains with the "plastic peices"....enjoy!!!

Great Gun

I had a 22 and went to the 23. I paid $459 + tax last November. The gun shop owner is a PT Night Sites dealer and uses them on his guns. I had em' put em' on and contrary to the bad press they get on this board, I 've had no problems whatsoever with em. I am however thinking of going to the Ashley Express Big Dot plain. I really don't see the need for tritium sites. An acquaintance and LEO says Night Sites can give you away in a firefight fwiw.

Mine has been flawless and it is quite accurate. It loves 180 grain projectiles. As for the .40, it may not be a match grade caliber but it is an effective defensive choice--------------thus its popularity among LEO's. In fact, it is gaining acceptance in Australia.

Hold on Dean Speir will surely pop up and extoll the ills of the .40Cal Glock. ;)

Also swore I'd never go plastic, but love mine.

If you like Hi-caps, www.aimsurplus.com has some for the 23 on sale for $70 each. Not a great price for only 3 more rounds, but to each thier own.

BTW, thier website has a typo listing them as 12 round capacity, they are really 13 round mags.

You got the fever now.....

I bought me a Glock 30 as my first hangun and since have gotten a Glock 23.I love it as well. Now you have Glock Fever.

Glock 23

Ig:

I'm probably not qualified to comment since I only own one Glock 23, one Glock 23-C, one Glock 27, two Glock 19's, one Glock 17, one Glock 34 and one Glock 21.

But, here goes anyway. The Model 23 is a pretty good weapon if you are the type of person who focuses on reliability, simple maintenance, incredible factory customer service (that you will probably never get to use), and other, similar petty little issues.

The primary problem that you will encounter, in my experience, is that every time you pull the trigger, any round which happens to be in the chamber will fire. This can be very disconcerting to home intruders, muggers or carjackers (who are often intent on inflicting bodily harm to you or to your loved ones), and could cause them considerable anxiety and/or a shortened life expectancy. (A related problem is that Glocks will not fire unless you actually pull the trigger).

A secondary problem which you may experience is that a single Glock may later seem to be insufficient to meet your perceived "needs". At that point you may well find yourself acquiring additional models of these ugly, icky, contraptions simply because you find that they are dependable and that you are willing to stake your life on them.

I wish I could have provided this information prior to your actually purchasing your G-23 since it might have dissuaded you from such a rash course of action. Having missed the opportunity to forewarn you about the potential pitfalls of Glock ownership, I can, at this point, only wish you the best of luck.

Stay safe,

You should be a salesman! I have already run into the, "Gee, it would be nice to have a .45 ACP model, and possibly a 9mm, and while I'm at it how 'bout the .357 Sig?" But I think I'll enjoy what I have for a while.

My only fear is that the Glock (any model) meets several qualifications for the Feds making them illegal:

1. They're black
2. They have pistol grip
3. They can accept high capacity (read: STANDARD capacity) magazines
4. They're ugly and look intimidating

They must be on someone's short-list somewhere for immediate illegalization and confiscation.

Guess I'll have to buy while the buyin's good!
