Found somthing very interesting at the local gun store yesterday---a new, ITB, "6" inch 686 in stainless with an unfluted cylinder---is this a model variation that's possible and is offered from the factory or should I be a little suspicious? First time I've ever seen an "L" frame with an unfluted cylinder---it looks great, crane to frame fit is very good, cylinder/barrel gap is good and the lock up is nice and tight etc ---has the lock, but that can be easily remedied---should I the snap this up ?

A lot of you really known your stuff when it comes to S&W---I'm simply asking if anyone can confirm that an L frame with an unfluted cylinder is one of their L frame options----John

I can't find any 686 variants on S&W's website with unfluted cylinders, but that doesn't mean that what you saw isn't a discontinued variant, part of a limited run, or a Performance Center gun.

Now that you mention it, I do remember them being an option awhile back--this does have the lock which suggests that it's pretty current--thanks for the info-----John

It depends on your definition of "current". The lock has been around since 2001, so the revolver you saw could have been made anytime in the last 11 years.
