I have a S&W 637 airweight that has the clear coat peeling off of the frame. It is an alluminum frame with a stainless cylinder. I don't want to send it back to S&W for another clearcoat, I just want to refinish it all together. What can be done to spruce up this little j-frame and what is the best company for the job. Links and pics would be appreciated..... Thank you, Randy

Like you, I don't care for the new S&W polymer finishes on the Airweight revolvers. I had a Model 38 S&W done at Accurate Plating and Weaponry quite a few years ago in industrial hard chrome. It is very durable and basically bonded to the metal. I no longer own the handgun, but the finish was extremely hard. There is no worry of the finish wearing out or peeling off.

Why S&W, other than to save money, continues to use a finish that won't stand up to even mild cleaning solvents is beyond me.

There are some Boron finishes that are supposed to be as durable, but I've no experience with them.

If you like a black finish, contact W.E. Birdsong in Florence MS. His black-t is about as good as it gets. It is on the SA Professional and some of Wilsons guns.

How long will any of the "hard" finishes hold up on an aluminum substrate? A while to be sure. But wouldn't the Robar or Black-T finishes be just as durable on aluminum as well as more corrosion-resistant?

Of course, there is choosing according to color and price since every finish recommended will probably last decades if not a lifetime. I have to remind myself of that sometimes when I start to look at the really durable ones versus the "less" durable ones. :D

paint vs metal

Hardchrome or NP3 are metal finishes; Black-T and such are paint.
Good paint, but just paint.

NOT INTENDED to create flames...... :D
