New Federal LE 132 00 Rather Amazing

Picked up some of the new stuff. At ten yds, would you believe 1 1/8 inches? At 15 yds, just under 3", and at 30 yds 4 1/2 inches! From a CYLINDER bore. :D I'll test some more when I get my new Scattergun Tech. Combat shotgun. I'm also interested to know how the, also new, LE 133 8 pellet Tactical load will pattern.

The new Federal LE 132, LR, 00 Tactical has a new smoother case with lower brass, inside are 9 copper plated 00 buck, each weighing 50 grains. These are contained in Federals Flitecontrol wad, which is the secret to the tight patterns. Same wad used in their Turkey loads. At 40 yds., one flyer opened up the pattern size to 18" from 12! I'm now having to rethink getting a choked barrel, else I'd have to put a "buckshot scope" on the thing. Something tells me we're entering a new domain where Tactical buckshot loads are concerned. ;)
 
Sounds similar to results I recently got from Winchester ranger LE 00. Low brass, 9 pellets as well.
At 21 feet the target looked like a slug hit it and at 50 ft I could cover all 9 holes with the base of a soda can.
Also fired from an 18.5" cylinder bore. :cool:

I was informed that Federal engineers designed the new Tactical with Flitecontrol because of all the police cylinder bore and IC shotguns out there that could use the xtra range. Looks like Federal succeeded. Not everyone will want this stuff for HD, but it looks awesome outdoors.

In my gun, the new Federal load cut patterns by more than half the size of the original Federal Tactical. Less than 3" at 15yds is Vang territory from a cylinder bore, as is 4 1/2 inches at 30yds.

Of course different barrels can differ quite a bit. If yours is that tight with the original stuff, what would it do with the new stuff? :D
 
I wonder why a tight pattern is so desirable.
Seems to me that your chances for a miss go up with a tighter pattern.
Why not just shoot a slug if you want 3inch 40 yard performance.

The new LE 132 00 9 pellet load says "Features new Flitecontrol Wad" on the box. Picked it up at a Reno Gun show last weekend. I bought the last case on the first day. Check out Ammoman. The shells are smoother and a darker maroon color. They also have lower brass. Disect one and you see how the Flitecontrol wad works, and the plated shot. I ordered some LE133 00 8 pellet ammo from Ammoman and I'll be interested to see how that performs. I also ordered 000 8 pellet buck. Don't know if this comes with the Flitecontrol, but I think all of their Tactical stuff might have it before long.

One advantage to the stuff is that you have an effective pattern at 25 to 40 yds. This disadvantage is that you have to be more precise at closer ranges, and aim the thing, but the Tactical Shotgun never was a "point and pray" weapon. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that we can now carry, say, slugs, along with current buckshot, and also have the super tight new stuff so that the ammo we select will determine the size of the shot pattern--more so than the choke.

Don't forget, the new stuff was designed for open choked shotguns. I don't know what will happen with tighter chokes, but it may be that the results are about the same, since the wad and shot all go down range farther before the "fins"open up and the drag pulls the wad of the shot column and doesn't disturb the plated shot, which doesn't deform and spread the pattern. With a conventional wad, the fingers pull back immediately after exit and release the shot that has been constricted by the choke. Only testing will see what really happens.

With the original Fed LE 132 00, my shotgun was very effective out to between 15 & 20 yds. After that, the still lethal pellets weren't tight enough for consistent stopping power--not that 4 to 6 00 buck pellets wouldn't be seriously life threatening eventually.

I'll be packing the new stuff outdoors, and using the Federal Ranger indoors. But even there, one must AIM the shotgun precisely, since no shotgun has much spread at spittin' distance where you'll likely be using it.
 
I am not sure if this is the same stuff but I've seen the "new" ammo advertised at ammoman and it is listed as LE133 not LE132.

Federal Tactical

The stuff I ordered from Ammoman was NOT the new Flite Control ammo. Received it a couple of weeks ago. I ordered LE 132- 00, LE133 -00 (8 pellet), and LE 132- 000. The new stuff says "Featuring New FliteControl Wad" on the box. You notice a 15 yd pattern under 3", and a 30 yd pattern at 9" including the flyer to the right of the 15yd pattern. From cylinder bore.
