New Federal HST 380......

I have two 380's that I carry as the occasion warrants, an LCP and an LC380. I was excited when Federal recently brought out the HST version of the 380 round. The 9mm HST has proven to dependably go deep and expand to full wide six pedal star. The 124gr and 147gr in 9mm have been 100% reliable so far in my Walther P99c.

I bought three boxes of the 380 HST and went to the range this morning to put them through my two 380's. I have about 300 rounds through my LCP an maybe 600 through the LC380. Both have proven to be very reliable. The LC380 has been 100% and the LCP had a two hiccups with the Freedom brand that has a wide flat tip on the FMJ ammo. LCP has been 100% on all other brands. For my defensive loads, I use the Performance One. Have put 250 of those through with no failures.

In one 20 round box of the HST, I had a total of six failure to load - three in the LCP and three in the LC380. As I say, the LC380 - the absolutely smoothest shooting 380 I have ever owned or shot - has never had any FTL/FTF/FTE and the LCP rarely. I've had no failures from the 9mm HST.

Maybe it is a bad batch, maybe it is my two 380's, maybe the design is not ideal for the 380....but I look forward to future accounts from others on the new HST 380 from Federal.

Sorry to hear that the .380 HST is not working reliably in either of your two pistols. I am awaiting publication of penetration/expansion test results before deciding to try this cartridge in my .380.

I have heard great things about the LC380. I really like my LC9. It would be a great platform for 380. Doesn't the LC380 fire from a locked breech? That may be the wave of the future in quality 380's.

Sometimes the ammo/pistol combo is just like that. l had a very nice FEG 32 that would work fine with every ammo I tried in it - except Winchester white box. That brand caused all kinds of malfunctions. It's a good thing we have plenty of brands to choose from. :)
