New Deer Rifle

After many years of service, I want to retire my old
Model 70 Winchester. I've been looking at new rifles and
have narrowed my choices down to;

Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight
Remington Model 700 Mountain Rifle DM

The caliber will be .270 Win.
I know this is almost the same thing as asking if a Ford is better than a Chevy but I would be interested in hearing from someone who shoots either of the rifles.

Maybe I should change my handle to ".280 Man", but really...why insist from the outset that the rifle be in .270? If you're a handloader, you can get more out of the .280 Remington.

That said, I can tell you about my experience with the 700 Mountain Rifle in .280, and that is, it kicked like an SOB. I have a Ruger 77 MkII in .280 now, and it is very civilized. Draw your own conclusions.

Based on my experience with the .280 Mountain Rifle, I would say go with the Winchester. You get the benefit of a bolt that locks so that it can't dump your ammo or possibly even work its own way out only to be discovered when the buck of a lifetime sits in your crosshairs.

(Yeah, I edited this...it was poorly worded. I mean even WORSE than it is now. :) )

Rebarrel

dk6, I crossed that bridge several years ago with my Rem.700 in a 270win. I chose to rebarelled my 700 with a Shilen barrel. I still kept it in a 270 caliber. It shoots great. Cost wise, it was about like buying a new rifle. I just figured it was better to have the Rem 700 action and a new high quality barrel than a new rifle with the factory barrel. Good luck...Mike;)

IMHO, you just can't go wrong with a Remington. I have shot the Winchester before; however, the Remington just has a better feel to it.

Winchester Featherweight

I am partial to the Featherweight. Mine is a 6.5 X 55 swede.
The wood and checkering is fabulous for a $550 rifle and it puts 3 rounds of factory ammo in about an inch at 100 yards.........Mike

I agree with RiverRider.

Unless you like recoil, get the Winchester Featherweight as they are only about half pounds more in weight and just as handy.

I don't own a Rem Mountain rifle but I have shot one in 7-08 and second one in 30-06 and for their caliber they kick a lot more than Winchester or Ruger. That 30-06 recoiled like my Ruger 300 Win Mag. I have and enjoy my Remington model 700 rifles but I don't want the Mountain Rifle.

Currently, my Winchester Featherweight in 6.5x55mm is my favorite bolt action rifle and the recoil is light enough to shooot 40-50 rounds in an afternoon. Great accuracy is just the icing on the cake.
