New Concealed Carry Pistol

Hey again, folks. I'm looking at getting a new CC pistol. I currently carry a Stoeger Cougar 9000. It's a little bulky (about the size of a full size Px4 Storm). I'm looking for something in 9mm that has at least 9 rounds (8+1 or more). It also needs a manual safety for my wife. My current thought is the Smith and Wesson MP Shield. I'm not familiar with many other guns under $500. I'd prefer to stay in the major brands like Beretta, Smith, etc.

Also, there is a gun sale that ends today (Friday) where I live, so I hope to make this purchase today. Please let me know your thoughts. :)

The Shield and the Ruger LC9s will be the only single-stack 9mm pistols that meet your price and manual safety (optional on both) requirements, assuming sane prices at your LGS. However, I don't believe that Ruger makes an 8-round mag for the LC9s -- but don't take my word for it. If that's the case, then that leaves only the Shield, for which there are both 7- and 8-round mags. It's a great gun. You could also look at a Ruger SR9c. It's slim for a double-stack.

1911's are my choice in 9mm's....but $500 won't get that done / unless you find something used...( Springfield, etc )..

OK, I agree that if it is as big as a px4 storm ( I love mine), than too big to carry.

Now, I went through the same and looked at Nano, Sheild. Liked both, and bought the Shield which took a while. Anyway, I got and had it at the range a few times and I just could not warm up to it. Liked the grip, but hated the trigger - pull etc. Did not like the takedown. Anyway, I sold it. I know I should never sell anything, but I just did not like it.

So, My brother and I are going to take our concealed carry soon in Illinois and I am looking again. On my short list is
skky
Kahr

But have not handled them yet.
So try to look at them or test before you buy, but that is hard to do.
Good luck.

I'm sure that the Ruger is a good gun, but I went with the M&P Shield (CA compliant with slide safety) and I am 100% pleased with it. Super reliable, easy to shoot and clean, and very accurate.

Have you considered dropping to 380acp? Reason I ask is that both the ppk, and bersa will match your stoeger manual of arms. You typed 9000 but I'm assuming you meant 8000, cougar da/sa with slide mounted safety?

They do make an "L" version with a slightly shorter grip frame. Also look at the px4 subcompact for an easier packing pistol.

Single stacks leave almost zero options unless you stumble across a Smith and Wesson Chiefs Special 9mm. But they've been out of production for a while. I personally like the Sig 290rs of the current pocket 9mms but it has no safety. Good luck in your search.

Why manual safety? ?? Thats just one more step you need to worry about during a self defence situation.
Have you thought about a DA/SA like a sig 229?
