New concealed carry gun

Im in the market for a new concealed carry gun. Im not really set on a caliber, But at least 9mm. My only criteria is that Im looking for a compact, or subcompact 1911 platform. Steel or alloy frame... what do some of you carry? Pros and Cons ? Reccomendations ?

How bout some pics?

My vote would be a Dan Wesson CCO. At $1300 orr so, it is a heck of a deal and the best 1911 I've shot. I've shot Wilsons and they were on the same level, just not better in my hands for CCW.

The Dan Wesson's are super nice... if it's just going to be a carry gun, I would say to look at RIA(Rock Island) or SIG for a little nicer. Both should be quite reliable.

I do like the Dan Wesson...Its at the upper end of my price range, but its doable. I dont mind spending extra coin on something that could potentially hold my life on the line. Definately one to consider...
What else?

Colt Defender . Mine is a older one and has been totally reliable. I had a ne agent sold it I could never get used to the sight. Never a jam but sight didn't work for me.

I have a DW from 2007 is a good pistol, but today I think their over priced .

My two small .45's are the Glock 30S and Colt New Agent but the Defender is the same size. Small .45's are ammo fussy and I had to go through 4 3" 1911's to get one that works all the time with whatever I feed it. The Glock 30S is basically a Glock 30sf with a 36 slide. This trims off 3 ounces and increases slide velocity so you get a slight increase in shot to shot time. With the right Holster, it carries nicely. The New Agent is slim and carries better than the Glock and is more suited to my point shooting style.

My small 9mm is the Sig P938. Fits in pocket or on belt and is less than 17 ounces. Also have the Shield, a great bargain these days. Other than these semi autos, I use snub nose revolvers. Mostly when one of my semi autos jam at the range and I am reminded that they can jam at any time no matter how much you clean and lube them or test out your ammo in them. :)

I've never understood this philosophy -- that's it's okay to spend more money on a paper puncher than a gun in which I am entrusting my life.

I carry a Dan Wesson CCO and agree it's top notch. That was my first choice.

The Sig 938 is technically not a 1911 platform but they are very similar in user operation. If I were going to stick with a true 1911 style pistol and go below the CCO size, I would look at the Springfield EMP which is a 1911 re-designed around the 9mm and .40 S&W cartridges. A number of parts are scaled down and are not interchangeable with a full size 1911 but the re-design is supposed to increase reliability with these cartridges.

Anybody have any experience with the 3 and 4 inch Kimbers?

Carried a Kimber Pro Carry II for a couple years, great gun, dead reliable out of the box with all ammo, accurate.

Replaced it when I realized I prefer all-steel 1911's over the aluminum frame. Got a Ruger 1911 CMD recently and its been fantastic through its first 300 or so rounds.

My preference in 1911's is the Commander length over the tiny ones, the 4"(ish) barrel is plenty easy to conceal and I prefer the full length grip for shooting. I also prefer all steel for more comfortable shooting/follow up shots. Good belt and holster and I don't notice the weight difference when carrying all day.

YMMV.

I had a Kimber super carry pro and I had to send it back twice because it wasn't right. It was worse after it came back the first time and their customer service is absolutely awful. I have 2 other older ones that are great, but the customer service I experienced will keep me from giving Kimber any more money. I sold the 4 inch and bought something else. Next compact 1911 will probably be a Dan Wesson or Smith E-Series

If you're getting some additional reliability for the money, I'm all for it. I'm not suggesting carrying a KelTec instead of a Glock. The Dan Wesson is a beautiful gun. My suggestion was based on that OP didn't specify his price range. I was just giving other options in the field. The RIA's are cheap but are reported to be very reliable and good shooting guns. The Sigs are in the middle of the 2. More expensive and a little nicer finished than the DW.

If your philosophy is spending as much a possible on your gun, then why not carry a Wilson Supergrade?

I had a Colt Defender several years ago. Absolutely reliable. I just had to inside the barn to hit the side of it.

Well ill have about 1500 to spend, but if 500 of it goes to ammo... then so be it.
Im more concerned about getting something I really like

...buy once, cry once

I'd say that's about how it should go. I don't generally consider carrying a gun until it has a minimum of 500 trouble-free rounds through it, including 100 of whatever carry ammo I'm planning to use - usually 230gr HST +P for 45acp.

The Sig C3 is a great option and can be had for a little under $800. Would give you a good bit of money for a good holster and lots of ammo to get used to the gun.

Certainly not trying to steer you away from the DW - it's excellent. Just depends on where you want to put your funds.

I have a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry II that I have had no problems with, and also a Colt XSE Lightweight Commander, that is also trouble free.
They're both pretty light and easy to carry.

When I carry a 9mm. it's a Ruger LC9.
All three of them are carried IWB.
