New Carry Choices

hey guys....

As you know I carried around my huge lug G22 full frame 40Cal for awhile.
I sprung and got the Kimber Ultra Pro Carry II TLE in .45 and love it. However I am seeing more and more its not practical carry.. in the sence of it being bulky... fat like my full frame glock. And the thumb saftey to deal with on draw... and if I must remove the slide and barrel in the street, well... I need my special bushing tool.. and its 7+1.....

I was looking at a cheaper replacement...

Here are my options:

Glock G26
(even though its chambered in 9, I try never to carry less than .45 on a CCW. But I imagine some 190 grain and +P rounds would give that 9 some better kock down power. Plus this is my wife's model and WOW I do like it.. but its still wide)

Glock G36
Its chambered in 45, sub compact "slim" frame same as the G26, but slighly fatter.

S&W/M&P Sub compact with the picatiny rail chambered in either 9MM wil 190/+P or the .45

And then there was the from what I heard the slimest Sub COmpact of all sub compacts... the Sprinfield XD SC chambered in 9MM... however, the SC only comes in .40 and 9MM not .45 and I DO NOT want another .40

If I go to a Spring Field COMPACT XD I cna get it in a .45 but it makes the overall length 3/4" longer... and fatter, and taller.. so it defeats the purpose from changing over from the Kimber, correct?

I look for several key facts since I am a larger (WIDER) doode...

1) SLIM - AS SKINNY AS CAN GET IT (MOST IMPORTANT)
2) HEIGHT - HAS TO BE SMALLER THAN 5.5"
3) ACCESSORY/HOLSTER OPTIONS...
4) SIGHTS GARBAGE or CLASS?
5) TAKE DOWN/ASSEMBLY
(NOT ONLY FOR CLEANING EASE LIKE THE GLOCKS- BUT I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO USE A SPECIAL TOOL/PRECISION SCREW DRIVER, OR MANY PIECES. IF I I AM IN THE FIELD NUDE WITH NO CLOTHES, PACK, ACCESSORIES, TOOLS, CASES OR HELP... CAN I TAKE THE UNIT APART AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER?

Thanks for any help guys, and of course those don't have to be final choices.. I am open to suggestions .... lets try to keep it under $600... UNDER $500 is most ideal.

While were at it any holster options for IWB that I've never heard of?

I;ve been told these companies

Sounds like you need a Walther PPS. Slim, easy to take down, and very accurate. Available in 9mm or .40. I have one in each caliber, and they're excellent ccw's.

The Kahr CW45 is slightly shorter and narrower than the Glock 36... and just as reliable. I have one, and I've also fired a G36. Prefer the feel and looks of the Kahr. Of course if you want to pay more, the Kahr P45 is an upgrade from the CW45 but they're very similar. There's also another size smaller Kahr - the PM45 (5+1) if you want a highly concealable 45, but I'm sure it's kinda snappy to shoot. Here's a pic of my CW45 w/Crimson Trace and extended mag (7+1) alongside my plainjane CW9:

Out of the original choices, I pick the XD subcompact. However, I really second the option of the Kahr CW9.

Glock-36 is a CCO size 45, for me the size and weight is great. 6+1 with extra mag give me 13 rounds in a great CCW package. Very mild recoil for a small 45acp. It has moved to the top of my carry rotation.

I always felt full size pistols ride better. The longer barrels tend to offset grip weight and balance the pistol. My 02.

For me I would suggest (not in any particular order)

Glock subcompact
S&W M&P Subcompact
Kahr line of pistols

I carry my Kahr a lot. It is a sweet pistol. My next size up is the G26 - sweet pistol. I don't own a M&P but I'm very interested in them. Especially the pro series.

on the holster topic. I carry the Comp-Tac MTAC holster. it's very nice you can also change out the kydex bodies so you dont have to buy a whole other holster if you carry more than 1 of your guns.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. The Kahr pieces are nice.. but even in their instructional video they use a small screw driver to remove the slide pin... and if the manufacture suggests the use, well.. that's out for me already. The glock is an easy slide off... However the grip is still thick because of their mags and I believe that on my fatAZZ wide belly frame that's not gonna help either. The XD is nice, but again uses a slide pin...

Are there any other guns similar and slimer?

You can use an ink pen, pencil, etc... use your imagination, but you don't HAVE TO use a screw driver.

That said, I would suggest a G26 or even step it up to .40 S&W with a G27.

The PPS is a sweet gun, as is the M&P. The XD sub-compacts are too bulky in the slide area for my liking.

The XD has a takedown lever, not a pin. But the PPS takes about 2 seconds to field strip. And again, its SLIM and very shootable.

I have 3 Kahrs and don't have to use anything to push out the slide lock.
I had an XD45c also and yep, it was fat and heavy when loaded to the gills. I now carry a CW45 and it's a huge improvement in the carry dept. and just as reliable as the S'field ever was. My advice is to check out the CW45.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess that your Kimber is about as thin as any of your other choices. Additionally, if 7+1 isn't enough capacity you'll start getting into double stack mags and that won't make your rig any thinner.

I understand the take tool issue but let's be honest, not many of us have had to take down our gun in the field.

If you want to carry a .45acp, guns chambered for it are only going to be so small and so thin. Carry guns themselves are a trade off between chambering and size.

Rather than searching for a gun that to be honest, I don't think exists, remember; carrying should be comforting, not neccessary comfortable, why not change your method of carry first?

Try a leather IWB. Leather might ride easier.

Try OWB. If part or your "bulky" problem is running around with a gun down you pants, OWB might solve your problem. A good gun belt and an OWB Galco Fletch makes carrying a 1911 pretty easy to pull off and conceal with an untucked loose fitting shirt.

Anyway, just a couple of suggested stops on your quest.

"Rather than searching for a gun that to be honest, I don't think exists, remember; carrying should be comforting, not neccessary comfortable, why not change your method of carry first?"

Agreed. The most important factor should be how fast you can get your weapon into action, followed by comfort. Personally, I have no difficulty carrying my P220, either from a comfort or concealability standpoint in an old Galco leather pancake.
