just picked up a Browning A-bolt (first gen) in 300 win mag for $200.

it has a synthetic stock (ugh, will change out for wood)
and the muzzle was drilled up to be a brake.
came with a cheapy 3x9 i think bushnell

is this muzzle brake a factory option? or was more likely after market.

anything i should be on the look out for? ill be detail stripping/cleaning it tonight as well. and will check the throat next time at the gunsmith.

the finish could use a redo so i think im going to do that
ill get pics up tonight when off work.

opinions?

It could be ordered with the "BOSS" system which was a combination muzzle break and barrel "tuning" device to tighten groups. Is it still on there?

its dont think its the boss. there are no markings on the barrel like pictures ive seen also there is no threaded areas

best i can do with my phone, dark, and in the truck

I own a first generation A Bolt in 300 Win Mag, my rifle is a stainless stalker. That is an aftermarket muzzle brake on yours, Browning only offered the boss system or nothing on their rifles at that time. I considered getting one myself because of the recoil but decided against it due to hunting with people who don't wear ear protection in the field. My trigger left a lot to be desired and has had some custom work done on it but other than that I think it is a fine hunting rifle. For $200 I think you got a heck of a deal.

The Abolt triggers are easy to adjust. The sear engagement surface is already pretty smooth, well fitted and extremely simple, so just a spring change is about all that is needed. Mine runs at 2# safely.

To the OP-that might not be the factory stock. It looks almost like a Ramline stock was fitted to it. The factory synthetics are smooth, and are actually really nice.

why is it that EVERY browning is designed with ONE part that is almost impossible to reinstall correctly. this a-bolt, the "bolt head key pin", what PITA!!

in/out/in/out/in/out/in/out... it took forever to get the orintation correct
