Your post about things in New York (state not NYC)brings back memories. I grew up in NYC and lived in Brooklys, Queens anf Manhattan at various times. I left permanently in 1967, the year they enacted a city ordinance(NYC) requiring the registration of long guns(rifles/shotguns). This was during the reign of Herr Lindsay as mayor.
Originally, $5.00 covered the registration of as many rifles and shotguns as were being registered. Last time I heard, if I was correctly informed and if I undestood the fee had increased some. It had gotten to the level of $50.00/gun/year. Mind, this was a crime prevention measure, laughter is heard in the background. I left NYC in the fall of 1967, ending up in The Bay Area (SanFrancisco/Oakland). It was nice then, though it has gone down hill over the years, at least in-so-far as the gun owning law abiding citizen is concerned. Isn't it strange, that no matter what the law might say, criminals always find guns.
Nowadays, in Western PA, gun ownership for the law abiding person is no great problem, though there are some unfortunate types in the legislature, and the governor, Ed Rendell always was bad news. Seems as if the State Police ape those wonderful folks down there at BATFE, though U.S. District Court (3rd District) sort of "bodychecked" them last year.
As you noted, the northeast is bad news, partly a result of the people that get into elective office, and so is California. Large partds of the rest of the country aren't to bad, places like Illinios, Chicago in particular, being rather sad, again a function of voting results and patterns.
Anyhow, gun owners need to keep their eyes open, possibly more so now than before, for in my view, there is always the old question concerning how many "friends" in elective office we actually have. When push comes to shove, any number of office holders seem to forget their campaign claims, statements, primises, along with the fact that the eagerly sought votes of those dastardly gun owners helped put them into office. I guess that such is life.
One thing I'm curious about. Other than as a form of harrasment, what in blazes was behnd the 5 sets of finger prints and 4 photos you mentioned. In 1955, I obtained what was then a fairly high level security clearance, it was job related. The FBI which did the background investigation was entirely satisfied with a single set of prints no pictures and a couple of personal references, it might have been 3. Of course, they wanted a complete listing of every place I had lived going back to 1937 or 38. Having moved around some, even back then, I was unable to come up with some old addresses. Got the security clearance anyhow. Not likley I ever could have gotten a carry permit in NYC. I wasn't politically connected, nor was I wealthy, nor did I "know" anyone. I too never regretted departing NY.
