I have just read an advance copy of a new book which I think Firing Line forumites will find valuable.
DEFENSIVE LIVING is written by Ed Lovette, a recently retired CIA Operations Officer and Instructor, and Dave Spaulding a police officer whose assignments have included SWAT team, Firearms/Tactics Instructor, and currently Lieutentant in charge of a covert counter-narcotics task force.Ed and Dave have written extensively for law-enforcement magazines, as well as both being staff writers for the popular COMBAT HANDGUNS.
DEFENSIVE LIVING concentrates mainly on the "software" of self-protection, with chapters on Awareness and Survival Stress. Two of my favourite chapters are on Willingness and a very practical section on the neglected topic of Medical self-aid.
These mindset aspects are not just addressed as theories. The authors offer practical methods for installing and utilising mental awareness for operator survival. Included is a section on how the intelligence service had to develop and modify their situational awareness training of personnel.
Hardware is addressed, but, refreshingly the book does NOT go into 45 v 9mm, Weaver v Isosceles, DA v SA, basket stamped v decorative stitching so beloved by the gun press.
Ed and Dave quote many souces, including some quite specialised research.
Chapters are interspersed with actual case histories, most concerning intelligence personnel in hostile areas.
In my opinion this book will become a classic alongside Coopers PRINCIPLES OF PERSONAL DEFENCE.
Available from Looseleaf Law Publications, the ISBN is 1-889031-26-7.
