New Big Game Rifle

Old Ugly

I've decided to get a new .300 Win Mag but I cant come to a descision on which one to get. So i'm going to need some help from you guys. Here are the choices.

Ruger M77 Hawkeye Magnum Hunter. MSRP-$1099

Remington 700 XCR II. MSRP-$1005

Browning X-Bolt Long Range Hunter Realtree Max-1. MSRP-$1199.99

Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 Range Certified. MSRP-$1199

Those are the choices. Tell me what I should get and why.

The Ruger is the only one I would allow.

Ruger is made in the USA. Has CRF and many other features that the others lack.

The last one is made in Japan by those who started ww2.

Old Ugly, while I'm a pretty big fan of Rugers, and I think the Magnum Hunter has a lot going for it with the muzzle brake/weight system and Rugers overall reliability and toughness, I'd have to vote for the vangard 2 in this case. When you consider the inherent accuracy, decent trigger, the B&C stock which you won't have to replace, the Weatherby offers the best package, I believe.

Ruger480, I was considering Savage but I already have two of them so I decided I want something different.

Allenj, i'll mainly be using it for elk and black bear in Wyoming.

John843, saying the Vangaurd has a decent trigger is an insult to this its trigger.

Savage99, I like German guns so I don't have a problem buying a gun that has a barrel made in Japan.

whats wrong with the winchester model 70,CFR,adjustable trigger and comes in several models. i own and use three lefthand cfr model 70,s made before the fn model 70,s. a 270 SS walnut a 7mm mag blue walnut and a 300win mag blue walnut. they can be found NIB on the auctuon sites. these are ex shooting rifles. eastbank.

#1 choice would be Winchester. I'd strongly suggest 300 WSM over 300 WM. #2 would be Kimber in the same chambering. The Ruger is #3, but not offered in WSM chamberings.

Depending on how you hunt weight may be an issue. The Ruger is heaviest, by a 1/2 pound, so you may want to consider that. I don't have any experience with an X-Bolt but do with an A-Bolt. It served me very well for many years while elk hunting and it never let me down. My aging shoulder can no longer can take the beating it gives though (it's in 300 Winchester Mag) so I sold it and got a 7WSM, built on a Ruger action no less. I don't walk as far as I used to and while it is on the heavy side for a hunting rifle it did not seem to be the main factor slowing me down this last season:eek:

A few years ago I purchased a Vanguard S2 and I'm very impressed with it. Very accurate, very reasonably priced (I got the cheaper model), and so far very reliable. I've also owned R700's and have shot more than I can remember. I can't think of one complaint for them, the ones I've shot have always been accurate and reliable.

If I were you, and you may have already done this, but I would handle each rifle and see if one jumps out at you as better than the others. I don't think you can wrong with any that you list, they are all made by reputable manufactures.

I would very much like to do that but I was recently at a Gander Mountain with a GIANT gun section and could find any of them there. And I dont recall every seeing any of them at the local bass pro either. And on top of that, its not very easy to even find some of the specified guns for sale on the internet. So when I do buy, and it will in all likely be through a gun dealer getting it off the internet, my purchase will most like be based completely on internet reviews.

Savage, you sound like my neighbor. He is still fighting WWII in his head. He disrespects every oriental he comes into contact with. Time to move on. That war was a long time ago. Japan is our ally now.

The Japanese people that started WW2 were in their late 40s up to their late 60s in age in 1940. So the youngest ones would be 113 years old now. I doubt that are ANY alive today

Blaming their decedents for the attacks on Pearl Harbor (or China for that matter) is like blaming white men and women today for “taking the land from the Indians”

I took nothing from any Indian. My dad didn’t either, and neither did my grand dad.
There is not a white man alive today that took anything from any American Indian, and there is not an American Indian alive today that had anything taken from him by “The White Man”. (Unless we count the same men and women that take from EVERY American EVERY time they can, regardless of race. That being the current government)

No Japanese citizen has done me any harm at all. Some tried to kill my dad, but even he forgave them after a few years. In fact, I own several tools, a Toyota 4Runner and a few guns made by them, for which I am very thankful.

Racial hatred is illogical, and it’s without basis. There are plenty of people groups today that we need to be wary of but not because of their color or race. Because of their beliefs and their dedication to those beliefs. Again see the current government for examples.

Of the ones you listed, personally I would go with the X-bolt. I might consider it in the WSM offering though.

I would consider the browning or weatherby if I was getting a new bolt gun

the safety on the browing and the short bolt lift on the weatherby are my main points

I know it isn't on the list, but consider the CZ 550 Ultimate Hunting Rifle, only available in 300 Win Mag.

It's just a hair pricier than the others you listed. MSRP is $1453, but it also has an MOA guarantee out to 600 yards. Available in both synthetic or Turkish walnut.

I've got the 550 American in .270 Win and it feels like it was made for me. Absolutely love it.
