New Beretta 682 vs. Old Beretta S682

Hi,

I have a Beretta S682 Sporting, made in 1985, and I'm very satisfied with her. My friend has just received a brand new 2006 682 Gold E Sporting.
Beside the finish (mine is the plain hard chromed receiver and the new one has the gold inserts and gold trigger).

How do these two guns compare ?

The obvious difference I saw is that the old one has much thicker receiver walls than the new one, and that the new one has the optima-choke.

What do you guys think ? Just for curiosity...

The other significant difference will be the barrel weight. The Optima bored Beretta barrels are lighter than the old Mobile choked versions. Other than that and the narrow receiver the guns are identical.

Thanks !

Is there any info if the old model is more durable and/or reliable than the new one ?

I've owned two of the older 682s and they were built like tanks. I know several shooters currently shooting the 682E and from everything I've seen they are every bit as durable as the older models.

Mechanically, the guns are the same. I don't know of anyone to ever wear out a 682. Beretta went through a series of cosmetic changes on the 682 frame. Early ones had the polished steel frame, then there was black frame and the one that I thought was by far the nicest was the 682 Gold with the greystone finish. That apparently proved too expensive so Beretta now has the Gold E. As already noted the barrels changed too, from fixed choke, then the mobil choke system to the larger bore Optima barrels which are a little lighter in weight. All very good guns.
