New Ar Owner needs some assistance...

I came home with a NIB DMPS Ar-15 from the gun store yesterday after a quick trip to buy some ammo. It only came with two 10 rounders and I know 30's are around but there seems to be a lot price variance...What is the conventional wisdom on reliable ar magazines? Also what is the conventional wisdom on bi-pods...is there a standard? Anything else you think I should know?

There are three types of good AR mags. They are:

1) USGI mags - made in 20 and 30 rounders. Are metal and have a variety of different manufacturers.
2) Thermold mags - 20 and 30 round plastic mags used by Canada
3) Orlite - 30 round plastic mags used by Isreal

I've used all of the above in my Bushmaster with no problems. Stay away from unmarked mags.

I just picked my Bushamster up yesterday as well.

I just need the right scope if I can ever figure out which on?

As for Mags, go to http://www.assaultweb.net and check out the for sale stuff. Or http://www.ar15.com and mags. There are a lot of USGI stuff there. I would say USGI should be your 1st choice.
As for Orlite, there are 2 different mags from what I hear. One works fine and the other needs to be fixed.

Good luck and tell us, what is your next AR?

Keep your eye on our marketplace forum. Magazines of all sorts pop up. I bought a Ruger factory Mini-14 30 rounder at an excellant price.

Triple DITTO on the USA mags, in fact I have 2 new ones I would be glad to send you and pay the shipping.

Honestly, I couldn't do that...I mean screw a fellow AR guy. I will take them for a long drive in the desert and blow the heck and springs and followers out of them.

A round of 44 mag worked wonders on the usa mag that came with my AR. Pushed the spring out the exit hole about a foot and a half but, thats about the only use I can thinkof for USA mags.

Like my USGI 20 and 30's

Mil surplus maga should run $10-$20 depending on where you are. Thermold function well, but can malfunction in cold weather (sub zero F)...they look damn sexy, though. Armalite AR-180 mags made by Sterling are interchangeable and made of STEEL.

Why on earth do you want a bipod? The Air Guard forces us to use the @#$%@#$ things to sight in, and I shoot a 1" group at 25 meters. All well and good, except without one, I shoot a .3" group.
Fixed bipods are the wrong height for almost everybody. Adjustable ones are fine for sniping. The AR-15 is not a sniping weapon.

I also purchased a Bushmaster XM15-E2S A3 Saturday. I also got a 30 round Thermold Magazine to go with the 10 round mag that came with the gun.
Are there any specifics I should know? What about barrel break in period. What is the best cleaner for the chrome lined barrel. Is it OK to dry fire?
I can't wait for my first trip to the range!
Thanks in advance, for your help.
Jim

As for USGI mags, stay away from those made by Cooper and Sanchez. The few Sanchez mags I have feed fine, but don't drop free. I understand the Cooper mags were recalled and destroyed, but I saw one at a show not long ago.
