New AR, need advice.

Finally have a grand to play with for a new AR. I love the bushmaster dissipator rifle, 16'' barrel with 20'' guards and sight. However, I was wondering if anyone made the "dissipator" model besides bushmaster? Or is the bushmaster a rifle that can hold up to bit of abuse such as carbine courses? I was thinking, if I do not buy the bushmaster whole, build off a spikes lower with ccmg dissipator upper.

What do you guys think is a better rifle?

The Bushmaster isn't bad, but if you're planning a carbine course, a few extra bucks is probably worth a higher end brand.

One thing you'll find is that the Dissipator is a carbine length gas system, which is a bit rougher than the midlength system on a 16" barrel. I don't remember if the CMMG variant is midlength. It might be.

Another thing is that most makers don't bother with this kind of configuration; they usually just put on a low profile gas block and then go with a longer railed handguard... if you're thinking you might like the room for gizmos, that's probably a config you might prefer.

If I were in the market for a new AR, and had a g to spend, I'd go RRA Elite Operator 2. Do what you wish - 1000 $ is the price point and double isn't twice the rifle, but $500 is half the rifle. Spend your g and shoot that gat.

Hmm, was snooping around. Hows this setup sound..

PSA dissipator upper (mid length sys.)
BCM lower
BCM carry handle
BCM single point mount

I just built what I wanted, cost me $1k. That was a 6.8PC.

PSA has a good reputation, looks like they are doing the same thing Spike's did a few years back - great parts at great prices.

If dissipators have one pitfall in building, it's getting an FSB mounted forward on a barrel that's NOT .750 at the rifle - which is a lot of midlength gas barrels. The solution doing it yourself is to use a clamp on FSB. I found Armalite had their stripped one back in stock, and got that. I also bent feeler gauge strips to fill in the .050 difference (a .024 and 5 will do,) and mounted it up. It holds the handguards with no rattle, you set the amount of load.

The rear sight is an issue M4, used, Cardinal forge mark, cut down. Together I have less than $80 in them. Much cheaper, and much more milspec than BUIS and all that.

If you really want a Dissipator style rifle, the CMMG Medcon uppers have the option of carbine, midlength, or rifle gas systems. I would probably put this onto a Spikes lower.

If you don't really need a Dissipator, I would look hard at a complete Spike's Tactical Mid-Length. Spike's is great quality, and they are great people to deal with.
