I just picked up a S&W 629 Classic .44 with the 6.5" power port barrel. I plan on using it for deer/hogs this fall, and I may put a scope on it. However, I am not very familiar with the port on the barrel. How effecient is it? What kind of accuracy can I expect at 50 yards? What is the general consensus on the 629?

In general, the 629 is an excellent pistol. Off a rest you should expect groups around 3" at 50 yds, maybe better. Be careful with the Power Port though. The noise level with those things is significantly higher, to the point were shooting it even one time without protection could permanently damage your hearing. Seriously, you should consider wearing ear plugs while hunting, or at least have them ready and put them in before you take the shot (that's what I do when I hunt with a comp'd barrel). -- Kernel

I have the 5" barrel Smith & Wesson 629-5 "Classic"
.44 magnum. It has a buttery smooth double action,
and its not even the DX model! It's definitely a
"keeper", as I like it mighty well.:) :D

Thanks for the pic, Ala Dan. That is my pistol, except mine has Hogus rubber grips. I just ordered a Leupold 2x for it, so I should have some pics of the whole rig be next week.

Oh, BTW Dan. I forgive you for being a Vols fan. See you Oct 12 in Athens for the butt-whuppin'!

I also have the 2X Leupold mounted on my 6.5" 629 Classic - non-ported. Also used the same scope on a 29 Classic 6.5" - a good scope choice in my opinion! The accuracy of my 629 is amazing when using the scope and firing from a soilid rest. The 29 was probably just as good but I no longer own it. Would like to hear how your ported barrel model shoots.
