New 870P Finish Scratched (Pics)

Hello,

I just got a new Remington 870 Police with parkerized finish. I have not shot it yet but did cycle the action a three or four times. I noticed there is a large scratch on the right side of my magazine tube. I don't know if the gun came this way or it happend when I cycled the action but I'm guessing the latter.

Anyhow, it appears that the forend is scratching the magazine tube on the right side but the left side is great with no wear at all. The scratch appears to have removed all the parkerizing already and it looks to be deep actually gouging the metal. Is this normal? Do others of you with an 870P and parkerized finish notice this scratching as well? If it's normal, I'm fine with it... If not, what should I do? Return it to Remington? Is this something they should fix?

I understand that over the life of a firearm it will get dings and scratches but this seems excessive for a new gun that hasn't even been fired yet!

Cover it with magic marker or bluing and try cycling the action again to see if it's still rubbing. Looks more like a gouge, rather than just rubbing on the fore-end tube. Of course check the tube in the fore-end also.

I had an after market fore-end that rubbed against the tube. There were rub marks up high on one side of the tube and low on the other. Obviously an alignment problem! I had to lube the mag. tube every dozen rounds or so. The problem has since been corrected. Hopefully yours is properly aligned and operates smoothly, and it was a mistake at the factory. I'm assuming that the mark was there before you cycled the action, but check it as I mentioned above. :cool:
 
Wear marks on the mag tube is a normal occurrence. That however strikes me as being excessive. Call Remington, or better yet e-mail them the pics and similar narrative.
 
Assuming it is a gouge, should I be more concerned about corrosion? I got the parkerized finish becuase of its rust resistance...
 
Maybe "gouge" is a bit extreme, but that is unnaturaly heavy wear. I don't thinks you should be more concerned about rust than the wear...the "gouge" could indicate either a major burr, or misaligned action bars or something else misaligned, which is of greater concern than rust which under the circumstances probably has no time to form due to constant rubbing. I'd really send the pics to Remington...
 
If you disassemble an 870 and look inside the fore end tube you will see several small shallow "dimples" which are "wear pads" designed to space the action tube off of the magazine tube.

This is to prevent the heavy finish wear that older guns like the Winchester Model 12 exhibited.
On older guns, the entire tube's finish was quickly worn off.
On the Remington, the magazine tube will get lines worn in the magazine tube by the wear pads.

However, THIS is excessive, and I suspect something is wrong.
Back to Remington for a fix and a refinish.

Remington is very good about correcting problems and will repair it, refinish the gun, and return it quickly.

One piece of advise concerning Police guns.
Take a look at Remington FAQ's on the law enforcement site:

Remington says they spray all Police guns with hot cosmoline, inside and out as a storage treatment.
They recommend disassembling the gun, including the magazine assembly, spraying everything dripping wet with Rem-Oil or CLP Breakfree, and letting it soak in.

Wipe down and reassemble.

This dissolves the cosmoline, and impregnates the parkerized finish with lube to prevent rust.

Unless this is done, the gun can rust.
 
Thanks everyone for your replys. I have sent Remington a support request with pics regarding this issue. I'll let you know how they handle it. I've read the FAQ and was planning on doing the rem oil "soak" as they reccomend but will wait untill this problem is resolved.

I contacted Remington today and they told me to send it back to the factory and they would fix it. Kudos to their service department. I'll let you know how the repair goes...

On a side note, I've read many forum posts where people have had a real hassle shipping a firearm using UPS. I'm happy to report that my local UPS service center was extremly helpful when I went to ship it today. They didn't give me any problems and let me ship it ground without any questions. I was expecting a tense situation but it was a breeze.
