New 6.5-300 Weatherby - VS- .26 Nosler?

These are the two top velocity champs in the .264 bore size (my ballistic favorite). I already know that they are "WAY over-bore" and will have short barrel life. But, I'll only use them for specialized long range hunting of medium sized game. Therefore, 500 rounds will last me long enough, and I'll re-barrel as necessary. So, lets move past that part of the comparison. I will hand load for best velocity, accuracy, and bullet selection. Which is better, and why?

Thanx, Dave.

Who really care about either cartridge, Weatherby just didn't want to loose its reputation as king of speed. If you can't get the job done with either cartridge, then you probably weren't going to do it anyway. If Wayne VanZwoll can kill an elk at 600 yards with a 6.5 Creedmoor, then I'd say if you can shoot either rifle then you'll not be under gunned. You're 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other, flip a coin buy/build a rifle and go hunting. Both are too new to the market for anyone outside of Weatherby or Nosler to have any real experience with either cartridge.

.26 Nosler ammo is available from many sources on ammoseek.com whereas the other isn't at all.

If you ever decide to sell it that might matter.

Well, one of them:

-Fits in a "standard long action"; the other doesn't.
-Is unbelted; the other is belted

That's all I need to know. I won't be doing either, but the .26 Nosler is the clear winner. There's nothing the tiny bit of extra velocity will actually get you from the Weatherby. Really, past a 6.5x55, the diminishing returns factor goes up dramatically. But, this from a dude who has a 6.5mm-'06, so I understand the desire. :)

Neither of 'em is better. Neither of 'em does anything more easily obtained, less expensive, cartridges do not.
.26 Nosler ammo is available only from No$ler. And only in very few rifle. The 6.5-300 Weatherby(MSRP of $95 per 20 is ridiculous.) hasn't even been released by Weatherby, so it you can't get at all.
Marketing types discontinue stuff that doesn't meet their sales projections with zero regard for their existing customers, regularly. So if you opt for either, buy as much brass as you can find too.

Neither. By the time you get load development done, it's time to rebarrel and start all over again. If you just gotta get a 6.5, get a 6.5-06.

the 6.5x300 weatherby wright hoyer has been around for over 45 years as a wildcat and was used in williamsport pa at the 1000yrd matches. i think the load was a norma 139-140 gr bullet with a healthy dose of norma 202. alex hoyer was a local gunsmith here in central pa who built a lot of them. eastbank.

I would choose the WBY because:
1. It is faster
2. WBY will support it from now on with brass and factory ammo. (Who knows what Nosler will do?)
3. I am an odd ball who likes belted cartridges.
4. I do not care about the cartridge length.

Having said all that, I have no intention of replacing my .264 Win mag. with either.

I just find it funny that all the mfg's can do is try to go faster, faster, faster with every caliber of bullet made. Where does it end?

I'll stick with my 6.5 Creedmoor,260 Remington, and 6.5-06. They do everything that I need to do with a 6.5mm bullet.

It ends with when we get practical phasers, suitable for sporting purposes.

(phasers, lasers, sonic disruptors, force beams, rail guns, phased plasma rifle in 40 watt range..hey, just what ya see, buddy!...)

When we get an arm that shoots line of sight flat, pinpoint accurate, immune to wind and gravity, and capable of destroying vital tissue and not turning the rest of the animal to ashes or vapor, THEN the quest for the faster bullet might end...

also has to be in a package at least a portable as a conventional rifle, too!
