I just bought a used S&W 586 today. My first revolver!!! I can't wait to take it to the range this weekend.

Any good 596 stories? Anything I should look out for?

Can't wait to put a few rounds down range!!!

S&W Model 586

Hello
I have a model 586 in Nickel. This is and early one as well. They will take lot's of punishment and come back for more. They were designed to take the .357 hot loads and are getting hard to find. They did have a issue that the head space was not enough in the early ones like mine. I elected to not send my back for this Mod. as I handload and set the primer extra deep to eliminate it from rubbing on the recoil shield. If you see your's is binding in cycleing when pulling back the hammer it too will need the mod. if you do not hand load. S&W does this for free. Regards, Hammer It.

Wagz, congratulations on a great choice. Give us a range report when you can & some pic's....I know from my own experience that you'll be on "cloud-nine" after firing this L-frame brute.

Beautiful Gun! Mine is new and blued with combat woodies. I'm waiting for Smith to fix it. :( TFL can't upload pics yet, or I'd post one...

Great gun, had one since 1994. Fantastic trigger. If it's a 586 no dash or a 586-1 there is a factory modification that Smith does for free. If there is a M stamped close to the serial number on the frame visable when you open the cylinder the mod. has already been done and if you have a later 586, never mind.

Wagz... congratulations on your new gun!!! And welcome to the world of revolvers and S&W.

Yes, all you should be aware of is whether you need the "M" modification or not.

Gotta say that the 4" 586 is perhaps my all time favorite S&W. They are magnificent guns, beautiful to look at, great to handle and to shoot. I'm sure you'll love yours. I have such a love of the model that I bought three 4" 586's before I felt I had enough of them!

Just fired the one with the osage grips last night in fact! 145 gr. Silvertips and the recoil was barely noticible. Great shooter.

Jeff... I just spend time different places, exploring all my gun interests, shotguns, tactical guns, semi-auto pistols, 1911's, revolvers, etc. Plenty of guns to keep a guy happy! ;) Glad you enjoy the pics! Best wishes to you.

Wags, a purchase that you won't regret!! I bought a 586-4 4" about 5 months ago, Excellent gun, you'll be able to fire .357 rounds all day long with no problems at all. The "L" frame is a very sturdy and reliable gun, I also own 2 686's a 4" and a 2 1/2".....Norm.

Hey Norm
Thank's for the compliment. I have them from the Florida Pan handle to Alaska now.. Because of GOOD people like you that believe in a durable finish. Best Regards, Hammer It.

I got out to the range yesturday.... WOW!! It felt great! I didn't have a lot of time, but I managed to put 50 .38's and 50 .357's through it. It is going to be hard not to shoot every other day (I would, but I'm a grad student and don't exactly have the $$$ for that much amo.)

I'll send pictures as soon as I take some.

Hello The wagz
Congratulations on the Christining of your S&W Model 586. I would suggest that if you are going to shoot Alot of .38 Special ammo that you might want to be sure to CLEAN the bore and barrel prior to shooting any .357's. The reason for this is if the .38's are a lead type bullet , They will leave an amount of LEAD in the cylinder and Barrel. This is a shorter round that the .357 and when you fire the .357 it has to cut through the .38 lead when you fire it. I simply carry a Tornado brush and a ram rod with me if i plan to shoot much. It only takes a moment to clean the bore and cylinder and keep's the pressure down in the cylinder & Barrel by doing this. I handload so it is cheap for me, but you may find that Wal-Mart is a good source for Winchester ammo both in .38 & 357. Simply look for the white & Red boxes.I also would LOOK for someone that is experienced in Handloading that is willing to help you load your own. It is a easy process once shown and I learned from a 70 year old man. I had to promise him to NOT load for anyone else nor load at all unless we were together. He showed me the right way, and when I Got to where I knew what I was doing Practically GAVE me the press and all the stuff I still use today.I also get ALL my Brass from the ground while at the range and this too will save you money in the long run. There are plenty of older guy's that would like to show a new guy how to do this, and it also gives them some company as well.It is fun and not all that hard if you have a good experienced teacher. This also builds confidence and makes you feel proud when you are loading your own, and have a high ten ring score. Good luck, Be careful and have fun, Hammer It
