New .454 Casull owner

I just picked up a Ruger SRH in .454 Casull the other week. I've been shooting 250gr hollow points and 300gr flat point bullets through it. I really love the gun. I have a question however about cleaning this gun. It has the target grey finish. Now I'm really picky about getting my guns really clean :) On the cylinder face there are rings around each chamber, I guess it is just the powder residue and etc. I know I will probably have to live with these unless there is a way to get them off. I now just scrub them good with a toothbrush dipped in Hoppes #9. Does anyone know how I might get these rings off? Has anyone ever tried Flitz metal polish? I'm wondering if it would hurt the finish. Thanks

I've used Flitz on blued guns and it didn't hurt the finish. If you have a gun shop locally that sells the stuff, ask, I'm sure someone has tried it before.
My shop has taken in two Rugers in 454 recently. Fortunately, he's priced them high enough that I haven't been too tempted by them, at least not yet.

I think it's called Lead Away. It's a commercial cloth impregnated with something that smells like oranges, and it works miracles! Cleans those rings right off. Careful not to get it on a blued finish though; I've been told it can ruin a blued finish. I've even had great success with it cleaning lead deposits out of the cylinder chambers.

I second Flitz, it is very good. Another CLP I've found that actually cleans wonderfully is Eezox. It's a better cleaner than a lube.

How would you get burn marks off your paint job?
I think that Target Grey finish is 'applied', and therefore susceptible to chemical removal as well as abrasive removal.
I'd be careful about cleaning those rings off with anything until consulting with Ruger about the best way to do it.

Because I'm waiting for my own new SRH/.44 to be returned from a 'blackening job', I'll have to ask the refinisher about how to do the same thing you're asking about.
The gun's base metal is stainless steel, now with a true penetrating finish as opposed to one that is applied over the surface of the metal.
I'll need to find out how to remove burned powder residue without removing the nice finish this guy is putting on it.

Good Luck on getting an answer to your question. I'd like to know what Ruger recommends. Come back and post to your thread when you find out.

Okay.. I'm a cheap bastard :o

At the shoe shop, we use glue thinner to clean all the glue pots.. I've found it works marvelous on cleaning the rings off my SBH cylinder, and I've been told it won't hurt anything(its stainless so, and stainless gets the rings real bad).

My understanding is the target gray finish goes over stainless?

Well heres another question. Since getting this .454 Casull I really have started liking these big bore handguns. I"m thinking of getting another handgun now. A Magnum Research BFR in .475 Linebaugh. Anyone have experience with these guns or with this particular caliber? Or do I really need another big handgun now with the .454? Will I gain anything with the .475 over the .454?

Dont use any polishing compounds on the "target grey" finishes. Its almost like a paint and is a coating on the metal...get yourself a small peice of felt and rub on it with a little of your hoppes...it will come off
