New 308 VEPR

I've been thinking about one of these for a while, and finally picked one up at the gun show today. For a total of $525, it came with a sling and 2 10-round magazines inscribed VEPR in Russian script. It's a pretty sweet rifle, and I'll be trying it out tomorrow. What kind of accuracy can I expect from it at 100 yards and how is the kick compared to a bolt-action 308 such as the Savage 10? Is it right that the action will not stay open on the last shot?

I had one and loved it (had to get rid of it rather than register it in CA) but i traded it for a .308 Savage so i can speek on both of them.

I had the Siaga .308, and its recoil was much less sharp than the Savage. Also the accuracy was surprising on the Siaga. I never did paper groupings, but i could routinly hit coke cans from 75 to 100 yards on my first shot...with the iron sights. This is extrodinary accuracy as far as im concerned (even more so for a battle rifle).
Oh, and just to make you feel good, i paid more for mine than you did. =)

with 1980 british radway green my Vepr is death on coffee can lids at 100 yards

one i get my new scope mount worked out and adjusted, i am very confident that it will easily hold a sub 2 inch group at 100

watch out for the stock scope mount,
make sure you keep the end of the scope even with the end of the receiver

if the scope is to far back it can kiss yer brow

don't expect to reload the brass after the Molot scratch & dent routine

compare to an AR 15, the Vepr gives you a pretty nice shove

like most AKs there is no bolt hold open

Anyone heard about converting these to use FN-FAL mags? It seems like one can get a VEPR for much less than, say, a DSA STG-58...wonder if the mag mod would kill the price advantage?

one of the AK smiths modified one to take .308 gallil mags

i think it boosted the cost to well over FAL prices

Robinson has the Vepr IIs taking standard capacity magazines in .223 & 7.62x39

if it can be done economically i would expect Robinson to be able to pull it off

i would think the BATF might object to a new semi rifle feeding from FAL mags

In .308 i really don't see much utility in 20 or 30 round mags

the 10s are pretty heavy as is

As you probably know, one of the big problems with modifying any high cap for the .308 Vepr is that the converted mag would still have to work in the rifle that it was originally made for or it would be considered a newly manufactured high cap mag and thus illegal.

The mods for the Vepr enabling it to use Galil mags invloved modifications to the rifle rather than the mags.

I own a .308 Vepr and other than the price the ten round mags don't bother me. I can't tell you how many times that I've heard people say that they would buy one if it took high caps; that's too bad as it's a great rifle for the money.

Alex Robinson is constantly inundated with requests for a version that will take high caps, but it's not a simple mod or he would have already done it. Maybe he'll do it some day,but I tend to doubt it.
