New .22 that won't shoot straight

My Taurus 62 sucks !!! :mad:

overpriced piece of crap


This is a pump action copy of the old Winchester 62. The Taurus site brags about how accurate this gun is, and considering how much it costs, it should be.

I've owned this gun for over a year. In that time I've run about 700 rounds through it of various manufacture. None of them can group tighter than 6 inches at 7 yards. At 15 yards I'm lucky if I hit the paper. Part of the problem is the sites are horribly off, the other part I can't quite figure out :(.

I never bothered to clean the barrel, mainly because none of the gun stores stocked a .22 brush and rod suitable for the task (why, is beyond me). Fellow shooters reassured me that a .22 doesn't need to be cleaned regularly and that it should be just fine. Well, the accuracy was so horrible I decided I had to clean it just to see if it made a difference.

Well it did, now the accuracy is worse.

When I broke down the gun I noticed there was some sort of white buildup in the barrel, kinda looked like dried toothpaste. After scrubbing that, and the lead buildup out of the barrel, I encountered something I have never seen before, rings in the barrel.

Rings ? Is that normal?

By rings I mean that...well take a look and I'll explain

Perpendicular to the regular rifling, there was a pattern of rings that occured every half inch or so. The rings were about as long as a .22 bullet and looked like lead build up. but were not.

What could have caused this ? Is this normal ? Would that be affecting accuracy ?
 
No, that isn't normal. Sounds like it may be tool chatter. Poor accuracy would be a result. Taurus has a good warrantee, I'd use it.

I have one and it shoots fine. Sounds like you got a lemon - my experiance with Taurus warrenty service is very positive. Give'em a chance to make it right.

I'm trying to figure out whether it came like that or some how, it is a result of my own incompetence.

When I cleaned the gun I used a standard Hoppes aluminum rod with a nylon .22 brush (the ONLY one I could find). I have yet to find a gun shop or sporting goods store that stocks brass brushes and rods for the .22.

I'll give Taurus a try, I was hoping I could just send it back to the importer. Now I've got to dig up the receipt and warranty that I am doubtful I have (irresponsible 23 yr old.). Think Taurus will still honor their warranty without said information ?


Hey Gizmo, what kind of accuracy do you get with your 62 ? What brand of ammo does it like ? It is a beautiful little carbine and it handles real well, too bad mine doesn't shoot.
 
Tool chatter can happen when machining is done with a dull worn out tool, at to high of a speed or without enough lubrication, or by a combination of those problems. Instead of leaving smooth rifling behind you get a rough uneven surface. Big time leading and poor accuracy are just about guaranteed as a result. Don't worry, the way you cleaned the rifle had nothing to do with the problem you describe.
 
why did it take you 700 rounds to figure out it did not shoot straight?

i would have sent it back after a small fraction of that. sounds like you got a lemon, just call them and tell them your problem. it shouldn't be a problem to fix/replace.

700 rounds of .22 costs less than $20.

Bet you'd have looked into it sooner if it was a centerfire rifle $$$$$$$$$$$.
