New .22 rifle - Remington 552...

I FINALLY tracked one down (more on that in a bit) and took it to the range last Friday.

Without even an intial bore cleaning (I checked the bore with a bore light before firing to make sure 'all was clear') using CCI 'Stinger' ammo on the 50 yard range, my first 5 semi-rapid fire shots yielded a 1.5" group.

My Dad was at the range with me (Father / Son range trip for Father's day :)) and not having fun with my AR shorty (short sight radius combined with his bifocals and 65% right eye cataract).

I turned the 552 over to him, and he proceeded to shoot 'jagged hole' sized groups.

It took me 6 months, 2 calls to Remington (to ascertain production status) and 3 dealers before I found one that used a distributor that had one in stock.

Now I know why I seldom hear about these rifles - they're too darned hard to find!

I bought a slightly used 552 with a Redfield 2x7 scope attached on Saturday. Took it to the range on Sunday. With all the high caliber shooting going on ( high noise level) and the tiny one hole groups that I was shooting, I had to check occasionally just to make sure it was firing. I've never owned a Remington before this last weekend and now I have the 552 and the 7400 (It was a good fathers day). I'm really happy with both rifles and I definately waited too long to buy a Remington.

Somewhere around 50 years ago I had a 550, precursor to the 552. I still think it's one of the best .22 rifles of any sort I've ever shot.

552, huh? Hmmm....
