New 1911 - How did I do?

Walked into my local gun shop this afternoon just to chat and sniff the Hoppes and there is was: A stainless officer's model series 80. It has the top-ramped slide, colt wrap-around rubber grips, beveled ejection port, four stainless colt magazines and the original box and papers. It has only had 50 rounds down the pipe; I know this because I know the owner. He threw in a box of 50 230gr. ball ammo. Paid $600 - seemed very reasonable to me considering the new Kimber next to it was $720. How did I do????

If you're happy, we're happy...

Personally, I bought a Springfield 'Loaded' 1911 Parkerized NIB with beautiful cocobolo grips, delta hammer, match trigger, spare mag, lock, box, papers, etc. and coupons for factory 10 round mags for 12 bucks, holsters for half off or more, and lots of other goodies for $585 two weeks ago.

Your's sounds like just as good a deal or better. Enjoy!

you did just fine, sounds like a good deal to me. i carry a colt officer {1991a1} ive had modified extensively, you will love it. i even love shooting mine more than my full size les baer for some reason. thats a good price. ENJOY.

Sounds like you have beauty, but I am a firm believer in a custom weapon, molded just for you. for example:when you drive a car, you like to have the seat adjusted just right, it makes the whole driving experence better, this true for handguns too! Take it to a gunsmith,
have it tuned, a factory gun can always be tweeked out just for you.

I second Chris's statement that a carry gun should be customized for you. Especially with a 1911. I currently carry a Wilson CQB and on hot days a Kimber Ultra Elite. Both function fine but there are little things that would make both even better.

So I ended up talking to Steve Clark for 3 hours. We ending up designing the ultimate carry gun for me. Everything from Kart NM barrel to Wilson Adjustable Combat night sights to hard chrome finish was discussed. I'll post results in late July, early August.

As for the officer's model, it sucks from 25 yards. I scatter 5" groups at that distance. However, from 10-15 yards, it fires like a dream. You will enjoy it.

With all due respect to Chris, I get so tired of this. Shoot it first. If you're happy, do nothing else but shoot it, clean it, shoot it, clean it ad nauseum.

I don't buy a new car and tune it up right away. When I buy a new sport coat, I don't alter it if it fits okay off the rack. Not all 1911's need a tune up to make it fit you. I can't figure what anybody could do to make me happier with my Kimber than how it came right out of the box.

Save your money and buy ammo unless you need to do something to it. And, oh by the way, enjoy your new purchase!

Captain Bligh:
I don't believe he ment to take the gun right of the box to a smith right away. What I got out of it was, after you got to know the gun, THEN take it to a smith for some "tune-up". If he ment to take it to a smith right away, I too disagree. Blast a couple thousand rounds through it. Change the recoil spring. By then, you'll know what you want to change... if anything :)

I don't like to perpetuate the myth that 1911's need a lot of work to make them good guns. It seems a common misbelief, particularly among their detractors.

After you shoot the gun some, you start to notice little things, things that will make you more confortable to use it, and no, I don't think 1911's need alot of work to make them great guns, but if it can be better better for you, why not? ;)

Captain Bligh - I agree whole heartedly. There is no Myth to the 1911 save the one regarding that one HAS to take them to a gunsmith to make them work.
That is indeed a myth.
The 1911 is the finest autoloader ever made. All the Automatic handguns that have come since maybe different, and newer materials and whatnot - but that has not made a BETTER pistol.

Glocks, Sigs, and HKs are held by me in high regard... (Crap - I said Glock first... doesnt mean a thing - I swear!!!!) They are all very good guns. But they are NOT better guns. That 1911 in close nearing 100 years, and I suspect it will easily go another 100. These newer designs have a lot going for them... but JMB (See the TFL PRIMER thread in General Forum if you need to know who that is) hit the nail on the head with his Masterpiece pistol.
You can take a new 1911 from any of the better makers and do nothing to them, and they will perform as intended perfectly.

What some people do not get is "the Hot Rod factor" that the 1911 has. It is such a great pistol that it touches a part of a persons heart that endears it to them. Its special, and one who appreciates that fact wants to make it even more so... they customize it and tune it... Just like they would do a Car. Yes - I have taken cars just aquired and sent them straight to a shop for some work. No - I am not nuts... I just take some things like performance machines and guns very seriously.
Starting out maybe with custom grips, and a trigger job... going on to maybe plating or engraving... there is no limit to what you can do to the 1911... Like an old 69 Camero it just BEGS for those personal touches.

Okay, George! I get that! You make a good point. Doing something to personalize it because you just plain ole want to is something I can accept. If you want to, fine. You just don't have to.

I have several Springfield 1911s - one is the "Loaded" model... Which has seen 1000 or more rounds and has not been worked on action or triger wise.
ZERO Malfuntions - even with some VERY crappy ammo.
No - No gunsmithing is needed in these modern 1911s. None.

You guys just clarified for me why I don't own 1911s. The myth of needing work to "work". It may very well be a myth, but it has effectively lowered my confidence in that make of gun.

Personally, I think Gaston Glock is just as much of a master at making pistols as JMB. You might convince me that the Browning design suits your tastes better, but you'll never convince me that it's superior to what The Real Pistol God, Mr. Gaston Glock puts on the shelf. No way!

Owning Glocks, Colts, Rugers, Walthers, and a few more :) I must say, it's either my 1991a1 colt (stainless) or the glock.
I usually carry the glock because it holds 15+1 :) but I just love my 1991. Sometimes I have to just go and look at it.. pet it a little.. soo purdy :) I think I go do that now :)
Great buy, IMHO BTW :)
