So I went to the rifle range today to sight in a new muzzle loader and there was this guy and his wife shooting a couple benches over from me and we got to talking a bit. He asked me a few questions about my muzzle loader and I was telling him about some other guns or what not that I own. Well I noticed he had a AR-15 with a scope on it and the Windage turret was on the left side of the gun at first I thought he had the scope rotated the wrong way and I thought it's not right, but it should still work because he is swapping the windage and elevation turrets. Well after looking at it a bit more I realized that he didn't have it rotated the wrong way, but it was installed with the objective to the rear and the eyepiece of the scope was to the front of the rifle. So I asked him "Hey man I got to ask you whats up with your scope being turned the wrong way" His response "is that the wrong way I was wondering because when I look through it objects look further away and I haven't been able to hit the target" The scary part he told me he just got his CWP...............

Now THAT is pretty funny...or scary. I do continue to be surprised at what people know or don't know. Though funny, what is bad about lack of knowledge about firearms is the enormous responsibility that comes with ownership.
If someone was brought up around guns (you friend obviously wasn't) then they probably have a good knowledge base, if not then they must educate themselves. Some are just plain lazy and choose not to.
His scope should have a sticker on it that says:
OBJECTS IN THE SCOPE ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR :D

I have witnessed the same thing myself. Not once, but twice. I blame it on simple ignorance, and I don't mean that in a bad way. Big difference in ingnorance and stupidity. There are lots of folks out there that gain an interest in firearms with no friends or family to show them the ropes. I consider it a priveledge to help those folks out, as it makes for a much more enjoyable (and more importantly, safer) experience for the shooter and everyone around them. Then again, I have ran into a few that are completely closed minded to anything that you suggest, and you can tell right away that they feel emberassed, but are still not willing to let anyone help. That is stupidity.

You clowns are such dimwits. Anybody with half a clue knows why he had the scope mounted backwards. He's a long range shooter. Jeez!

interesting...

I had a similar completely bizarre incident this weekend at the local county range. It's a very nice facility co-located at the county landfill; the firing positions are all under pavilions and there are scopes, baffle boxes, sandbags and staplers provided. Most importantly there are range officers on duty at all times which help sort out the idiots... USUALLY.

After waiting a few minutes to get a lane at the pistol range I merrily unpacked all of my "gear" and "toys" and prepared to blast through a few hundred rounds. About 5 minutes later my joyous splendor was interrupted by some whack job moving into the lane beside me with about 8 children in the 12-14 age range. Judging by their matching T-shirts they were all from the same "church". This fat, ignorant, obnoxious loud mouth proceeded to instruct them with a steady stream of internet gun lore and eventually moved on to the break down of society and end of rule of law. Apparently a SIG P226 w/ nice fat Hogue grips is appropriate for teaching 12 year old kids. Anyway, I was blasting a away at 2" targets at 25 feet with my Baby Eagle when I noticed something get stuck in my paper, it was shards of wood from one of the supporting columns. I look over at the smack tard in the lane next to me and he has the kids blasting away at a ZOMBIE target SIX FEET in front of them.

First, I explained to him that the minimum target distance was 15 feet and showed him the line on the walls. He then relocated the target to 8 feet. I'm thinking in my head ***.:confused::confused: I then TOLD him to move the target to the proper distance as it was a dangerous shooting angle and that his party was shooting up the columns. He ignored me and proceeded to spout some crazy rhetoric to the kids about keeping food stores in their homes. I then watched him HAND A LOADED AND COCKED SIG to one of the kids; I was on fire. Luckily the guy to my left then stepped in and pulled out a badge, he was a deputy sheriff from the next county over. He instructed the guy to STOP immediately and asked me to go get the range officer in the next building over.

Anyway, all ended well but with the post election gun boom I've noticed ALOT more crazy stuff happening at the range.

The stories here always seem to have the other guy doing the 'Dumb' things. Does anyone ever ameliorate the situation, or is just the 'In thing' to point out how 'Dumb' other folks are ?

I make dumb mistakes too.

I have mounted my scope and red dot backwards but realized it pretty soon after being at the range.

My reference to the CCW class was the people asking questions that make you want to run and never look back(warning shots, dragging a attacker back into your house, pull your gun on the creepy guy,etc)..

Hell, I shot an arrow straight up once when I was a kid, to see how high it would go. I stood there transfixed watching it go higher and higher against the pretty blue sky and puffy clouds, then it dawned on me what was fixing to happen. Not only did I learn how high I could shoot an arrow, but also how fast I could run...:o

When I see folks do dumb, dangerous stuff on the range, I do my best to explain why we have the rules we do, not just berate them. (though it's tough sometimes)

The backwards scope story was probably the best non dangerous dumb range trick I've ever heard.

I did a dumb thing this weekend.

I couldn't get my muzzle loader on paper at 25 yards. (using a small 100 yard target) I had to put two very large targets on the wall at 25 yards to find the hole.....I used 5 shots to get it close enough to take to the 100 yard range.

Took it to the 100 yard range after finally getting it close and have a meat killer now.

Speaking of arrows. One of my friends as a youth also shot an arrow straight up in the air. It proceeded to land right smack dab through his right thigh taking some bone with it in the process. Was messed up for quite a while.

We had a visitor come to our place, a young Korean boy about 15 or 16.
I was in my room cleaning my Remington 870 and had the barrel off, I went into the kitchen to get some spray to clean the stock and the young boy saw my gun and thought it was really neat, so I let him handle it a bit and he was happy as, thought my gun looked really cool.

How he didn't realise it had no barrel on it I will never know, I thought it was obvious but I guess not.
The same kid also didn't believe me that 00 Buckshot could kill someone.
I hope I never have to be around him if he has a loaded gun

Hook686 Yes the theme of this thread is how dumb people can be at the range involving firearms. It that hurts your little feelings because you have done most of the stupid **** well tuff **** get over it!!!!!
