Nerds with guns :)

I work for a company where everybody uses our gray matter between our ears to make a living. We all have bunch of letters after our name which defines our education and are all pretty gentle, easily excitable, quiet bunch who talk about latest and greatest software and best place to find French wine. Thats a nice way of saying we are a company of nerds.

I standout in this bunch because I'm not quiet, gentle or into wine (but I have to admit I do like latest and greatest software and have some letters after my name... I hope that doesn't make me a nerd).

I never talked to this bunch about my guns or shooting because I never expected these people to understand. Well, suprise! I just foundout today that several in the group have CCW and several more are "into" guns. I learned that 3 of them carry pistols into the office every day. I never expected those leather briefcase to contain Glocks and Sigs.

Now we are talking about forming a company shooting team to compete in local competitions.

I guess you never know...

Not that surprising. I have a pet theory that people who are true "rationals" (computer types, engineers, mathemeticians, etc.) are generally pro-gun. People who are psuedo-rationals (social scientists, wanna-be intellectuals who know all the buzzwords but can't form a rational argument, artists, etc.) are generally anti's. They "feel" before they "think". Somewhere on the web is a great personality test to take. Only something like 8% score as "Rationals". Everyone else groups as "artisans" or "protectors".

Check out the 2 threads here about -What's your profession.

I was amazed at the number of gun enabled geeks.

Although not an engineer myself (procurement type), I work in Aerospace with many of the heretofore mentioned "rational" types. A goodly number are into firearms, own guns, go shooting (there is a pistol and revolver club), collect, and some may have a weapon in their car depending on the length of their individual commute and work schedule. This latter point is rather touchy in that the company has regulations (security, you know) disallowing firearms on the property. But I've been told by security that unless someone brings it to their attention for whatever reason, they do not investigate or search cars at random. No one, as far as I know, carries on site.

Jack 99, you're generalizing a bit when you mention "artists." I work in the "creative" end of the ad business, and while there's enough liberals to fill San Francisco, there are some conservatives and gun owners amongst the bunch. The problem is that we can't admit to it, or we'll lose work.

'Course, it may also be that I was raised from the cradle--literally--to be an engineer, and went to college to study computer engineering. But, noooo, I had to be a creative, and now I make about the same amount of money as a journeyman plumber.

Thunk, thunk, thunk (me hitting myself on the head).

I was checking my companies' new Employee Handbook and according to the section on "Concealed Weapons" it reads,

"Unauthorized possession, use or sale of weapons, firearms or explosives on work premises is forbidden, in accordance with state and local laws. Violations of this policy will result in disciplinary action"
That is all.

All of us "gun guys" were talking together during lunch today and our consensus was that we can carry in the office as long as we had CCW license. After all, if we have state CCW license we are "authorized" by our state :)

It seems that the new handbook was written by our CFO and he is into guns. Rumor has it that he carries a .44mag revolver in his brief case and that our janitor once saw him putting it on his hip one night after working late. I guess he wanted to be able to carry in the office too.

Wow, I work for "gun" friendly company full of gun carrying nerds :)

Been working in High Tech for a number of years. Caught quite a bit of flack for my views when working in the 128 corrador. (Boston for those of you not in high tech) But since I was delivered from that evil :) and got my tail back home to Texas, life has been a bit more pleasent.

Now I work for a company who will NOT allow firearms on the premises (think BLUE) But we have these message boards within the company for after hours activites. I created a club for IDPA folks. I had already recruited three or four friends to join me and I wanted a place to coordinate our trips to clubs around the state. Before I had finished posting the general message about the club, I had three people I did not know join! I have gone to my local range and found my company "logo wear" filling up 7 of the 10 lanes. And this is here in what many Texans feel is the most liberal town IN Texas; Austin.

Yup. Geeks with guns are alive and well here in Texas. Proud to be a part of them.

The Rock is a IS geek.

The Rock owns many guns.

The Rock knows others like him.

They are geeks too.

Pet Theory- Good theory.

My boss asked me what/how he could get rid of some sort of mortar round that he had from his stint in Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. :D

(And they think that *I* might go postal..)

Monkeyleg: But at least you don't have to mess with broken pipes in crawl spaces!

More ammo for this theory; The science fiction club I was in in (Engineering, of course!) college has a sort of alumni meeting in the UP of Michigan every year; The Houghton "Berserker". Home-made fireworks, a magnesium beach bonfire, (Bring your welding goggles and SPF 100!) that sort of thing. I hear that a "You can try out my gun if I can try out yours!" shooting event has become part of it. Don't know from personal experience, as getting married got in the way of attending the last couple years. But NEXT year nothing's stopping me and my Calico from attending!
