Neostead shotgun

I posted this in the Shotgun forum also, but I thought I might get more of a response here.

I received an email from Neostead this morning. They are going into production and should be available around October 2001.

I'm not an expert on the intricacies of BATF rulings. Is this thing going to be legal for civilians to own?

They'll probably restrict its importation under the 'sporting use' clause of GCA '68, or come right out and declare it a 'Destructive Device'.

Kind of Depends if it Meets "Sportin Purposes" Import Restrictions

Karanas,

Well, it's a pump so the magazine capacity shouldn't be a problem under the 94 "assault weapons" ban (which only applies to semi-autos), the barrel is 22.5 inches long and overall length is 27 inches so it's not going to require an NFA tax stamp. My only concern would be if it's meets someone definition of being suitable for "sporting purposes" although I'm not sure that that criteria extends to shotguns.

HTH

Jeff

PS what's pricing going to be, or did they say?

Don't quote me on this, but I think that the GCA'68 sporting purposes criteria only applies to handguns.

Hope it's true. I really want me one of these.

Later,
Chris

Neostead query

I sent E-mail to the company asking about loaded weight, whether they will import with hopes Bush may ease BATF "rulings" and price. It LOOKS like a good idea, mostly. A reversed pumping action should present some novel training problems for the 870-590-37 crowds. I'll believe it when I see it. How many times have gun manufacturers been unable to come through? Still waiting on your Bren Ten or High Standard Crusader? Also, is the first incarnation of a new concept usually 100% reliable? I'll buy one....but not till somebody else shakes out the bugs. The length is the best thing about it, should be like the 870 with the 14 inch barrel or better. Great for shrinking patrol cars and room entry.

Saw one of these years ago, it was to be imported by Ithaca. When I asked Ithaca about it at the SHOT Show this year the owner was not going to be bringing it in. They were made in South Africa so apartheid was a problem. The company must have found another importer or set up a U.S. import company to bring the gun in. With apartheid history there is no reason to make a move to manufacture it here as was done with the Striker 12. It cannot be considered an 'assault weapon' because it is not a semi-auto. The only way the USAS-12, Striker 12, and Streetsweeper were classified as destructive devices was due to there over sized external dimensions. The Neostead(sp?) dimensions fall within the parameters of a standard pump shotgun so should have no problem being imported.

Yeah, this was profiled a few years back in SWAT , when Ithaca was going to be building them. Then Ithaca went into reorg again, and Colt was going to pick up the design. Obviously, Colt has had its problems lately. I wonder who is carrying the ball now.
Looks like they've tinkered with the design since the SWAT issue. It looks slightly futuristic now.
Guess I'll have to save my pennies again.

Jhp147 worte:
Still waiting on your Bren Ten or High Standard Crusader?

Believe it or not, I actually did see a presentation grade Crusader in a gun shop in Devner, CO, back in '80. Can't remember what caliber it was. If I'd had the extra funds, I'd have bought it, but I only had enough to afford either it or a CAR-15, so I opted for the CAR.

I hope they do bring this thing in, I'd really like to have one, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
