NEF Slug Gun

What is everybody's thoughts on the NEF single shot slug gun? Looks like it is made nicely. Rifling seems well done.

Best buddy has one and likes it. His is quite accurate, with the Remington Copper Sabots, and a decent scope. That 10 ga blank they bore to 12 ga for a thick bbl wall has enough weight to reduce recoil from agony to discomfort for most folks. His came with a steel weight in the stock to further cut the kick. Good pad, also.

A caveat, the trigger's heavy, and since NEF/H&R slams those action pins in with a 30 ton Hydraulic press, it's difficult to fix.

Unless my cataracts get bad enough in the next year or so that I get free eye surgery(a distinct possibility), I'll probably need to scope something for next season. Getting an NEF like this is a probable, and scoping it with a good Leopold like a 1.5X5 variable is a great deer getter.

Downside, these tend to shoot sabots best, and I've got all those KO Brennekes....

Blast from the past...

Rob,
Did you ever get the NEF slug gun and if so how do you like it?
Im interested in getting one..

Got one of the H&R Ultra Slug guns, with the heavy barrel. Shoots like a rifle out to 150+ yds. Accuracy is excellent, in the 1-2" range at 100yds with the Brenneke Golden Slugs made for rifled barrels and the Winchester Partition Sabots. Very little fouling from the plastic. Even shoots lead slugs well for 5-10 shells, then the barrel tends to lead up and 50yd ragged holes become become patterns that could be covered with a garbage can lid. 1.5-5x Simmons scope with a long eye relief gives sharp view of the target. Weighs 10lbs or so, its not the best for stalk hunting, but it will allow you a lot of reach when you need it. My father refers to it as an "Illinois Deer Rifle."

I've fired the same howitzer type slugs out of the NEF Slug Gun without the heavy barrel. A 3" slug from a 5.5lb gun with no porting, mechanical recoil reducers or gas action to soften the blow. Accuracy was decent, although not on par with the UltraSlug gun. If you want something that totes easy, or if you love recoil, its an option.
